This is quite bizarre.  I have had my cat for several years and only
within the past 6 months I'd say, he has starting doing this thing
with his food dish.  He has an adjoining food/water dish (the same
dish he's always had).  When I put in new water/food in the morning,
he starts dragging it around with his front paw, and water splashes
out all over and it makes a mess - but he keeps doing it!!! Why is he
doing this?  I was thinking of getting 2 separate like heavy ceramic
bowls so he can't do it anymore - what do you think?  The one he has
now is plastic.

Thanks!

Hi, Jessica.  A cat's usual reason for moving a water bowl is to make the
water surface rock back and forth so he can see it.  They dislike the
experience of accidentally sticking their faces in the water when they can't
see where the surface is.  Consider the possibilities.  Has his vision
become weak?  Has the lighting changed, or the position of the bowl been
changed? Have you been filling the water to a different level?

Regardless, it does look like separate bowls would work better.  He might
enjoy a fountain, such as a Drinkwell.

That's exactly why my two used move their water dish. They couldn't see
the water level so they would make the water move so that they could
tell where the water level was. Now that we have a water fountain for
them, they always know where the water level is and I don't have a mess
to clean up throughout the day. The cats seem to like it better as well.
They like the fact that the water moves and drink more water now than
they did before. One likes to drink from the fountain part of the
fountain, and the other likes to drink directly from the bowl. Everyone
is happy now. (Especially hubby, he doesn't step in water in the
mornings now).

Maybe he likes to see the water splash, or telling you to move it away from
the place he eats at. Your idea of a heavier bowl is a good one. For some
reason, my cats (2) do not like water near their food, unless of course it's
the aquarium.

My cat knocks the water dish over whenever it becomes dirty, you could
try giving it a good scrub.
