My cat does not understand gophers.

As I write this, my cat is lurking by the old gopher holes, where she
formerly wiped out the gophers, and ignoring the fresh gopher
diggings, where a new family of gophers have were digging last night.

She is a fairly obedient and respectful cat, compared to most, not
that that is saying much.   Is there any way I can teach her that
gophers are best found near fresh gopher diggings?  Or do I have to
wait for her to find that by herself?

If showing her the new gopher holes doesn't work, then she will figure
it out on her own. Probably sooner than you think.

I went out to take a broom to the van to get the snow off it, rather than
lay the broom down I stuck the handle in the snow making a little hole. Now
the cat is thoroughly convinced that there is a mouse or shrew living in
there and will sit for an hour or so waiting for a chance to pounce. I quess
I could go out and cover it up, but hey, now I know where she's at.

That would be my guess too.

Well today my cat is finally lurking by the fresh gopher hole.

Attempting to show her the gopher hole, moving her food dish to
near the gopher hole did not work.  My cat seemed to suspect I
was trying to make her become an outdoor cat, trying to move
her out of her house, and instead of hunting gophers became
resentful and hostile, but she has finally discovered the
gophers on her own.

Well today my cat is *still* lurking by the
no-longer-quite-so-fresh gopher hole, though I am pretty sure
that she has already devoured any gophers.

Oh well, keeps her from raiding other people's yards.   I fear,
however, that if she had to look after herself, she would starve.
