How can I get a picture of kitty so his eyes don't light up?
I tried throwing something so he'd look the other way but his eyes
still lit up all evil-like in the picture.

Light up the room and turn off the flash.

Also, get a good program that will allow you to correct the gamma level if
picture is to dark. A decent and free program would be IrfanView available
at http://www.irfanview.com/

Thanks - I'm still learning with my new digital camera.  I love being
able to just take a buttload of pictures in hopes that a few will turn
out.

I've never been so snap-happy in my life.  I took over 100 pictures last
Saturday - mostly at a festival.

But I digress.

I don't remember for sure, but I think I did use the flash for both of
the pics on the above page.

Whenever possible, don't use a flash at all.  Are you using digital?  If so,
you may be able to take pictures in relatively low light without a flash,
especially if you use computer software for contrast enhancement..

If you need to use a flash, turn on other lights in the room so the entire
area will have as much light at possible.  As you noted, you should try to
take the picture at an angle instead of having the camera aimed straight at
the cat's eyes.  If your camera has a hot shoe and you are able to spend the
extra money, it is best to bounce the light by aiming the flash upward
(instead of forward toward the cat).  Someone responded in another newsgroup
some time ago by describing a "home-grown" process for bouncing light.  I
haven't tried it, but she described taping index cards under and around the
light to force the flash to bounce upward.  The problem with that process
for me is that I can't count on my cats waiting for me to go through all
that before they change positions!

Actually digital cameras are known for their poor low light
performance. Film is much better in low light.

Does your camera not have a button for eliminating red eye?  The red eye
effect on cats, dogs and other creatures is like what you see on humans,
except that it's more pronounced.

One problem with the red eye-reduction button on cameras is that it causes a
series of quick flickering lights from the flash.  This often causes the cat
to immediately shift position, at least of the head.
