My cat had kittens a few months back. She's a year and a half and it was
her first (and only) time having them.
Well, yesterday we gave one of them away. Since then she's been lying
around the house and not being as active. Normally she's really productive
and talkative, but she only seems to murmur the noise she made to "talk" to
her kids. Also, the one we gave away was a part of a *team* with another
one of the kittens and that one is doing the same. Gonzo (mom) is
typically uninterested in her kids but has been cuddling with them and
being much more attentive since the one left last night.
Is it normal for cats to mourn the loss of one of their own? Is this
something only time can heal? I've been doing my best to talk to momma cat
and be extra nice, but I just didn't know of there's anything I can do
that'll help, besides bring her baby back.
Thanks, :)

You're doing the right thing under the circumstances. Cats indeed will
often mourn when a beloved member of the household, human or animal, is
no longer around. The grief can be particularly intense when it's a
mother cat or littermate. While suffering abandonment depression, the
cat will need more attention and affection in order to come to terms
with the loss.

Of course she will miss him for a while. Give her lots of love and
attention. MLB

yes that is normal...
but all you need to do is give her lots of love...
and in a few days, she will be just fine!
