Jayjay - 20 Aug 2003 17:10 GMT Dropped off my baby for surgery this morning. They are removing the tumors and trying to save the leg, but may have to amputate - or once the biopsy comes back they may have to go in and amputate anyway.
:-( I felt so guilty this morning. First we had to fast her - so no breakfast for her, which she was upset about. Then she saw her crate and ran to hid under the bed, the only way to get her out was to pretend to feed her. I put food in the bowl then walked away and when she came out to the bowl I had to pick her up and put her in the crate. I feel so mean! :{

> I feel so mean! :{ Oh, Jayjay, I know you must feel awful, but we will be sending purrs and prayers for her swift recovery with the least extreme solution possible. And I'm sure she'll forgive you; they're very intuitive about these things, and I'm sure she realizes how much you love her, even if she's not exactly sure what's going on.
Healing hugs for both of you, Ann

One note about crate or carrier. I leave mine out where babies can get to it in the spare room and Sam and Rascal sleep in it so they are not afraid of it. When took Sam to vet I got carrier and set it down and Sam walked right in.

So they use them as beds.
If a cat doesn't like its carrier try leaving it out all of the time, (of course they wont like them if the only time they are used when its a trip to the vet) spray the blanket inside with catnip add some treats or food and don't put it away again or try to get your cat in it. It will soon get so used to seeing it, it will go in without any problem.

If she does lose the leg, she *will* adjust, there's a 3 legged cat down the street from me (Albert) who can run up a tree just as fast as if he still had all four :-)

Shan - 20 Aug 2003 19:39 GMT Hi Jayiay, you "guilty feeling"is understandable, but you have nothing to feel guilty about, you are doing all you can because you love her and...she knows that....that's the wonderful thing about animals....
She might be scared and in pain for a while, but even if they have to do make the drastic decision and amputate her leg, she really will adjust to it faster than you expect,I've seen many cats with only three legs and they adjusted to their "new"state very soon. She will need you more though,at least at the beginning since she'll feel sort of strange and a little lost,maybe.....but she'll do fine.... Let us all know.......and pull her whiskers for me....I love whiskers...

I feel so mean! :{ jayjay - 21 Aug 2003 00:45 GMT She's home - they didn't remove all the tumors, just did a biopsy of part of the tumors. Which i find a bit odd. I'll hopefully have those results back before the weekend - although the lab is up in new Jersey and may still be backlogged a bit because of last weeks blackouts.
Boy is she pissed at me. I brought her home, let her out of the crate and she made a beeline for under the bed. BF went in and gave her just a bit of food, she went to him, purred and said hello. Its been a few more hours and she finally came up to me a few minutes ago, but you can tell she's still mad at me. She blames me for her discomfort right now. :(
Shan - 21 Aug 2003 02:45 GMT I find that a bit odd too,the fact that they didn't remove all the tumors....did you ask why?Anyway, wait for the results to come back...try(I know it's easier said than done...)to take a deep breath in the meanwhile and keep a close eye on her and any behavior changes....
I"m sure she's not angry at you..and ..no she doesn't blame you.....she is probably very sore and mostly confused and uncomfortable...she'll slowly come along again..
So,did they just do a biopsy or they removed some of the tumors as well?I'm not sure I understood that... Be strong.... Shan

She blames me for her discomfort right now. :( jayjay - 21 Aug 2003 02:59 GMT They apparently just did a biopsy on 2 of the tumors, and are asking me to keep a close eye out for infection, as there is still the remote possibility that this could be a blown joint and with the surgery an infection could set in (although they didn't want to bother with antibiotics at this point). poor thing was on bytril most the spring because of UTI and then again for 2 weeks trying to get the swelling down on this thing initially.
When I spoke with the vet last week, I was under the impression (swore she said) they'd do the biopsy, and drain the tumors at that point in time. But the vet that did the surgery is the other vet in the practice, not the one that I've been seeing about this. So, maybe they got their wires crossed in the care or what to do. Vet 1 said biopsy, drain, test then if necessary amputation. Vet2 called on monday and it seemed she was pushing amputation this week, until I asked that I thought they were going to biopsy first. Her response was, oh, yes, we'll do biopsy first then amputate if need be if that's the way you want to go, but its more expenisve. I mentioned the program that Sabrina's in that will take care of this. But I think she was maybe trying to save the program the money. On the other hand Vet1 said last week they have "carte blance to do whatever it takes to save her". So it sounds like the 2 have a small communication gap.
Of course for me - most this stuff doesn't sink in until after i've left the office and have a chance to get home and think. Not to mention that tonight i didn't get to see sabrina and see that they didn't remove the whole thing or at least drain it until after I'd gotten home, and the office was closed for the night. So I will wait till the vet calls (hopefully vet1) and ask her what's up and why they didn't do the whole treatment.
I thought it would be more like human cancer - or at least what I went through. First they took a sample (biopsy) and sent it to the lab - came back as cancer so they went in and took a larger area to remove it all then send that out for testing as well. Sometimes, if necessary more suregery might be required, and of course in humans you get radiation or chemo. Well - with Sabrina they'd taken a sample via needle last week and that came back as fluid, so i thought this week would be removal of the tumor and send that for testing and if they thought it was severe enought then amputation, but if not severe enough - or worse case, too far gone, then don't bother with amputation.
I'll know more - for now i'll go to bed and hope that Sabrina makes her way out from under the bed to climb up and cuddle with me. Her mobility doesn't seem to bother her - she was cuddling with me on the couch earlier and the dog came by and she swatted the dog with her right paw (surgery leg). BF and I laughed - I've definately got a right handed kitty, shame that's the one they might take off.

Good luck with it and, while I know cats survive quite well with only 3 legs, keep pressing for them to avoid amputation if they can!
Troy.
jayjay - 22 Aug 2003 01:23 GMT she's cuddling and purring nicely on my lap right now. Soon she'll want more attention and will begin walking on the keyboard and typing for me. Having a laptop means she'll just come sit on the laptop like they sit on newspapers and books. :)

Take care... Shan

I don't quite expect to hear anything until Monday though. Surgery was Wed. morning, and they sent the stuff out that morning, from FL to NJ. Takes 3 to 5 days for results. Maybe they might hear something by this afternoon or Saturday - but I'm not counting on that. So, we're stuck waiting till Monday.

Our boys were less than thrilled with us when we had their bits removed (and who can blame them, really? LOL....), but after a day or so, they came around, and were and are as loving as ever. I know it hurts, because you feel guilty as it is, but just know it will be worth it to have a healthy girl, and when it's all over, she'll put it out of her mind and be right as rain again. :)
Healing hugs and purrs for both of you, Ann
