The advice I tried on getting the adopted cat Freddie to eat was to no
avail. After 5 days we took him to the vet. He was given sub-Q fluids and
put on the appetite stimulent cyproheptadine. This calmed him down somewhat
and did get him to eat. 5 days of the medication and we were able to
discontinue it since Freddie started eating on his own.
Freddie is an ongoing project. He wanders around the house and plays with
toys a lot. He is still leery of us but will watch us from a few feet away.
Freddie is acclimating to the other 5 cats here. They are in the process of
deciding where he fits into the 'pecking order'. Yesterday he was eating
before Miss Kitty ate, a major social no-no. After watching for a moment,
she reached up and bopped him on the head once with her paw to let him know
this. Miss Kitty is only 2/3 the size of most of the other cats here, but
she is the only female and the acknowledged queen of the family.
We were up with Freddie every night for the first week. He constantly cried.
This is subsiding a lot and he looks more at ease and happier as time goes
by.
