Hello,
My cat vibrates his tail when he seems to be in a good mood. I always
thought this was kind of cool and unique. A friend of mine told me I had
nothing to be proud of; all cats do that. I still think it’s cool.
He does this pretty often and he’ll do it almost every morning when I
get up; I live alone and he’s not aloud in my bedroom so it’s always a
big event for him when I come out of my room in the morning.
Is there any meaning for this or is it just a simple manifestation of joy?

The only time I had a male "vibrate" his tail was when he was in the process
of marking his territory - which isn't very cute..
Now, however, I have a 7 mos female longhair tabby that wags her tail as
much as any dog I've had...and not just when she's annoyed, but pretty much
whenever she's awake and hanging out with us..

I have a calico that does this, and three others that do not. The sweet
calico greets me every afternoon when I come home this way--a real treat for
me, I guess for her too!

Think of it as a shiver of delight. Actually, they don't all do it, only
some of them. There is of course a tail thing that accompanies spraying, but
the happy vibration seems to have nothing to do with that, thankfully! My
Amber (RIP) used to vibrate her tail in greeting, with it sticking straight
into the air as if a helium balloon were tied to it. None of my others have
done it, though. Celeste wiggles the skin of her back in anticipation of
being petted. A similar skin wiggle thing is sometimes seen in cats who
have an over-sensitivity to touch and can't stand to have their backs
petted, but in her case, she adores it. Cat's have a lot of idiosyncrasies.
Helps us humans identify with them!

Some call it "happy tail". Only my oldest cat, Samantha, does that.

My cat rattles his tail this way when it is time to eat, when I come home
from work and when I talk to him in my 'good kitty' voice.
