It sounds like you've already encountered a problem.
I finally broke down and began to trim my long hair domestic for the same
reason. No matter how hard she tries, she'll still occasionally self
pollutes (a gentle term, I must say) - it only takes a few moments and is
certainly more pleasant and less time consuming than the consequences of
doing nothing.
Does anyone know of a better solution?

I agree,my cats are all shorthair now,so I rarely have that problem, but I
do cut their nails regularly, even tho they have the scratching posts.
I used to have longhair guinea-pig and I used to cut his hair all the time,
because of the same reason, it does get all mucky and sticky. So he didn't
enjoy much the cutting bit, but he got used to it :) I'm sure he was happier
as well with shorter hair :)
So yeah,go for it, why not. If you are not showing her, I can;t see a
problem with a little snip on the bumm :)
