How about making sort of a tray out of a large cardboard box, with sides a
few inches higher than the litter box, but without a top? Maybe that'll
catch more of the litter. Or, just ask him to cut it out.

Some cats will not use an enclosed litter box. Try removing the
cover.
As far as flinging the litter accross the floor, are you sure the
cat is flinging the litter instead of just tracking it across the
floor? If it is tracking you can get things that will cut down
on the tracking.

I agree with Amy. Unless you've seen your cat actually kicking the
litter out of the box, he's probably just got a bit of it stuck to him.
I would try a taller box on top of a largish door mat. A little
something for him to wipe his paws on. I really do not like dealing with
tracked litter so I have a roomba vacuum to keep it down. I think it
does a pretty good job. By the way, my Eldo won't make in an enclosed
box either.

How does the roomba work? Does it freak out your cats?
But then my cats run when I turn on a regualr vacuum.

I saw this thing at the supermarket recently - very high tech. You might
need a teeenager to program it. It was a wide, flat thing with a handle. A
dustpan, I think. On the next display peg, there was a brush which seemed
somehow related. :-)

Doug, how did she ever manage to survive all these years without you - and
your amazing ideas! Wow! Cleaning! A concept that never before occurred to -
a woman!
Gee, I just don;t know what would we do without men!

My kitten flings his litter across the kitchen floor as well, and yes i
have seen him do it as it is in the kitchen. He then likes to chase
after the bits of litter he has flung before climbing back in and
flinging some more! I have just bought a cat loo as i am fed up with
standing on it too, and am in the process of introducing it. He
currently just has the base with his already used litter so that it
smells right, in the same place as his old one and is really enjoying
playing in the top bit even though he has never been through a cat flap
before. This base has slightly higher sides and is slightly bigger and I
have already seen a reduction in litter on the floor so if your cat does
not like to be closed in you could just try a box with higher sides, our
local pets at home also sells a cat litter box with sides that bend
inwards to help stop the flinging.

Hey! My kitten does this too. Every time I change the litter, he goes in
there and digs out a few scoops onto the carpet. He doesn't get much
distance, but he is still young :)
I thought maybe he was trying to tell me I was overfilling the box or
something, but I think he just enjoys digging and making a mess for me to
clean up.
