Just wanted to share: my precious little orange cat had a stroke about 2
years ago and has gone steadily downhill since, and very fast over the past
couple of months.  I decided that, as long as he was still eating, drinking,
finding the litterbox and enjoying a little turn around the back yard, I
would let nature take it's course..clean up behind him (he would get into
the water dish then the litter box and track "stuff" around) I would let
nature take its course. Friday I came home and found him lying on the
kitchen floor half-gone and realized it was "time."  So I called the vet,
who came to the house and we gave him back to God.  I was able to hold him
on my lap and sing a little song I always used to whistle to him to get him
to come inside.  I feel ok about this, since I waited until he was ready.
Thanks for letting me share...I had had to have a kitty "helped" a few years
ago and the vet was horrible and I still feel angry and miserable about it
when I think about the whole thing, but this was different, and peaceful.  I
still have the other three cats and a puppy,  but I miss that little guy.

I sympathise with your feelings.  I had to have a beloved old cat put down
on Christmas Eve.

Our vet was really kind - we have been going to him with various cats for 20
years and this was
the first we'd had to have put to sleep.  When I looked at him in his box
before we buried him the
vet had put him in a sleeping position with his paw over his nose, so he
looked really peaceful.

Plus, a week or so later we got a hand-written card from the vet saying how
sorry he was but that we'd
done the right thing. It makes a huge difference to the grieving process,
although I still miss G every day.

Yes, a caring and sensitive vet matters so much during such a difficult
time.  Mine sent flowers after my dear Camille (a.k.a. "Mealer") was
euthanized two months ago.  I had so hoped, like nck, that I could let
nature take its course.  But as it turned out, I'm very grateful there was a
way to help her avoid suffering long and hard, and I was touched by the
vet's gentleness and kindness during and after the event.

May you both find comfort in happy memories of all those cute and clever
things your cats did during their lives, and the friendship they so freely
gave.

Nck, God bless you for being such a good and kind person to your wonderful
kitty. I wish all kitties were treated with so much love as was yours.

All vets need to realize that they always have TWO patients coming through
the door...one with four legs and one with two!!!  When my pets are sick, I
am not in great shape, either.

He was truly a wonderful kitty.

So well put. I wonder if they emphasize that in vet school?  They certainly
should.

I can imagine how wonderful he was.  At least as wonderful as he was orange.
What was his name?
