Hi
My two cats are 8 years old & have never had fleas by using Advantage or
Frontline.
All of a sudden they are getting infested, they jump around almost paranoid
seemingly to try to get away from the jumpies, they try & get up high ie on
tables or anywhere else.....we have had the occasional flea on our ankles,
have brand new carpet & we keep the house very clean. I don't think we have
any in the house but the cats carry on as though the place is a flea circus.
Has anyone any idea what is going on here & how to fix it?
My Vet tells me that we have a plague of fleas here at the moment, but have
never had this problem with the cats before this & I'm sure we would have
had plagues before this considering our climate..
Can they be getting them from outside somewhere, ie next door is a deceased
estate & unlived in for last 18 months.???
Please HELP,
Thanks
Pat

I have used the older version of this product and it got hundreds of fleas.
It also attracts other bugs.

I've never had a flea problem since using Advantage and now
Revolution.  And I live in Florida where cold doesn't kill
off bugs.

I think the unused house next door tells the story.

Hi Pat,

I'm here in Sydney too - I have 3 cats that are outdoor cats. I use
advantage all the time for fleas and find it is working fine. As with
most of those "behind the head" liquid doses I find I have hold them
and pet them to stop them immediately doing the dog-shake to get rid of
it. The bigger problem for me is making sure that I do the cats and the
entire house at the same time. I find that, once you have a problem, it
can be a real nightmare to get it under control because of the millions
of eggs that fleas lay that get scattered around the house. My usual
procedure is to de-flea the cats, 1 day later I flea bomb the house and
vacuum and then another bomb two-weeks later.

I hate fleas.

Hi Troy
I loathe them also.It just seems strange that I have never had this problem
before!
I have already decided to get some bombs for the house (my cats are
inside/outside but are locked in at night)
Re those bombs how safe are they, & what do you do with the animals whilst
they are being set off?
I heard that everyone has to evacuate, I also have fish tanks that I worry
about.
We don't use insecticides at all & are a bit worried about using them.
In fact my small garden has more insects in it than anyone could imagine, I
think because if I have pests in the garden I use things like soapy water
for aphids, pick the caterpillars off by hand & don't scare away the wasps &
spiders. Also love those enormous praying mantis!

Hi Pat,

You sound just like me with your garden, insects, goldfish, and dislike
for insecticides!

I am lucky that my whole house is not carpeted - only my bedroom and
office have carpet. It product I use (RAID roach/flea bomb - with
eggstoppers - or some other catchy gimmick name!?) is designed for a
single room. I usually do one/two rooms at a time, close the doors
windows and cover COMPLETELY any fishtank (plastic rubbish bag/bin
liner taped up). You leave the room for two hours, then air it for
30mins (or longer if you have the time). Then vacuum.

Remember to do you cats 1-2 days prior, otherwise they'll wander
through the house restocking your flea supplies for you!

I wish there was a safe product to use but I have never been able to
find it. I know that some pest control people now use pyrethrum sprays
but these would be useless against flea eggs which is the main issue.

You also need to turn off filters and air pumps for the tanks that are
in the room being bombed.

Cats get fleas from other animals and anywhere other animals have
walked, especially long grass.  For each flea you see on your cat their
are litterally thousands living dormant in your carpet.  You really need
to treat all your carpets as well as your cats and make sure you keep up
to date with it.  You may also like to check with your vet that you are
applying the flea treatment properly, and regularly enough.

Sounds like you got some good information from Troy (me too) thanks Troy. I
will do that before spring comes. I do have a question on bugs, I own a bit
of land surrounding the house and in the past (before the cats) always laid
a barrier of insecticide around the house to keep the ants and carpenter
ants out of the house. They can do some serious damage. If anyone knows of
an insecticide that will kill the carpenter ants and not harm the cats I
would be grateful for the info. The stuff I use does not hurt the chipmunks
or mice which are gone now due to cats. I still am concerned about it
though.
