I just got a new kitten and am looking for a bit of advice. First I'm just
curious hjow to tell how old he might be. I got him from an animal shelter
and they told me they thought he was 10-12 weeks old, but he is not much
bigger than the palm of my hand. He has teeth and he plays with toys, etc,
but does not like to be held or pet at this point. Guess that was kind of a
two-fold question there. How do you foster that affection. He loves to
play and will play with us, but just doesn't like to be held or pet yet.
Also, I have another male cat (he's been fixed) that is somewhere between 2
and 3 years old, and he has been the only animal for sometime. He's been
around our other cats and dogs in the past, but it was just him until the
other day when we got the new kitten. I've read info on the net of how to
introduce new animals, but this never seems to work. Our older cat has
hissed at us when just smelling the new kitten on our hands. It's been
three days now and the best we've gotten has been our old cat walking up to
a the carrier while the kitten was in it, sniffing and then running away
scared. What advice do you have?
TIA,

Sounds about right, I got my 2 latest kits when they were 8 weeks and they
were both palm sized. They're about 16 weeks now and started 'appreciating'
affection at aruond 13 weeks or so. Up until then they just played and
slept.

Adult cats will always be wary of kittens as they know kittens know no
fear - is what I was told. What you are experiencing is more or less the
same as my 12 year old netutered male acted. However in the last 3-4 weeks
he's regressed and developed some very kittenish behaviour which is great.
He and my 13 YO never got on as the older cat was an only cat for a year and
does not tolerate other cats near him (just spits and swats, never attacks)
so it's like Worf is making up for all the company he never got when he was
young. He sleeps and plays with the kits now & has learned they don't like
to play rough so is gentle with them.
