One of my cats has taken to getting at the hamper and taking soiled clothes
from it and making a bed for herself in the hallway. Yuk! seems the smellier
the better. Tried moving the hamper into the laundry room (well, nook), but
then she goes into the bathroom and jumps up and gets the towels. This
usually happens when I go to the store for a few hours or am out blowing
snow, which can also take a couple of hours. Should I even attempt to break
this habit or just chalk it up to her being into B.O.?

Since it's a cat, almost any theory could be correct, so here goes: She
likes your smell and she's trying to to permanently etch it into her memory
in case she dies and is reincarnated as a woman. Or, is it possible she's
pregnant and getting ready to deliver a litter in these nests she's making?
Or....maybe she just wants a resting place of her own creation. How about
hanging some towels that you're prepared to let her have, and just....let
her have them?

My cat is odd like that too, the second I take off my socks, kitty insists
on taking a nap on them.

Yeah My Tigger has a smelly sock fetish as well :) And towel fetish. That's
OK with me, cos its just probably mean that the smell is comforting to him.

Yeah Gary
Disgusting, but they love anything smelly,so long as it's not their own
smells.
My cats adore sleeping with their face, feet & anything else they can fit
into my sneakers, wools slippers & have even on occasions chewed my leather
walking shoes, they are not young so cannot excuse them for kittenish
behaviour. When they were REALLY small I would wake up in the morning &
there would be one in each wool slipper.
They also like my not clean towels, but will also sometimes just sleep on
the clean washing that I have just got in but not put away.
Cats actually will move their sleeping positions every 2-3 weeks, something
to do with when they were wild & wanted a new place that didn't have their
odour, or so I'm told.
Happy new year& good luck with those moggies!

Even though I wear a size 13 shoe, my cats were 1 and 3 years old when I got
them. They were too big to fit into them. That would be a good picture
though, having a kitten sleeping in a slipper. I wash an old towel with
every load of laundry and place that on top of the basket after taking them
out of the dryer. Last night the cat that never comes into my bedroom was
curled up next to my head and the other cat under the covers near my knees.
Don't know how they breath under there. Usually they like to sleep
downstairs next to the wood burner.

Getting warmer going to get all the way up to the freezing mark today.
That's unheard of here this time of year.

Hi
what a good idea about putting the old towel on top, you may be new but
smart,  I never thought of that move!
I've had cats most of my life & have never worked out why they don't
suffocate whilst sleeping under the bedclothes!
Mine do that even though it only gets a bit cold for about 6 weeks a year &
certainly doesn't get to less than 3 degrees (centigrade that is).
Wish you & moggies well up there!

Yeah, you would think they would suffer oxygen depletion or something. I
sleep with two blankets with a heavy corduroy quilt not to mention the
flannel sheets. The fire burns out at about 3 am and the propane furnace is
set to 58 then I kick it up in the morning and start the fire again. The
furnace only goes on maybe once between 3 and 7 am though so a tank of
propane last all winter. They do it for the warmth but I am worried about
any possible risk to them.

Cats like the smell of their people. If you ever have to leave your cat at
the doctor of some other strange place, bring some of your worn clothes to
keep with them. The familiar smell will make them more content.
