We came back from a 13 day honeymoon to find out one of our cats (both
female, neutered) had repeated peed and pooped on a section of carpet in
a corner of the room over a course of a week or more. I need help with
two things:
1) How do I clean up? The urine soaked through the carpet padding clear
to the floor. Is there anyway to save the carpet? I used a whole bottle
of Nature's Miracle and it still smells horrible. How do I treat the
floor -- will I have to sand it?
2) Any idea what caused one of my cats to do this? I suspect it was my
15-month old Moxie. Last year, when we had only Sadie and took a two
week vacation, Sadie, we had no such unpleasant surprise when we got
home. Moxie, a playful, happy-appearing kitty, is a bit skittish around
strangers, and mostly hid in the closet the week of our wedding, when
there were lots of loud strangers in the house.
My downstairs neighbor fed Moxie and my 2 and a half year Sadie every
day and we had a cat sitter visit 6 times to play with them and give
them affection. Moxie still appears very playful. She's fond of playing
with string and lately has taken to sticking her paws in her drinking
water and spilling it to create big puddles all over the floor (I'm
assuming this is her having a good time, right?). Can anyone provide
insights and suggestions for nipping this behavior before it goes to seed?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

hi. no suggestions about the peeing problem, but distilled white vinegar
is a excellent at neutralizing (as in scientific ph type neutralizing)
the smell of cat urine. well, yes, the smell of vinegar is no prize
either, but once the pee smell is neutralized you can clean up and it
will all be fine. no lingering odors six months later when the weather
changes or you move the furniture or whatever. the other significant
thing is to let the floor, carpet pad and carpet dry out completely
after your final cleaning before you lay everything back down or you
will have to deal with mildew which is equally nasty.

Try Natures Miracle, available at all pet stores. We have used it and it
removed all odors.
