Is biting that bad?

Hi

When I play with my kitten, he likes to nip and bite my fingers. However, he
knows when to stop without inflicting any pain. I let out a little yell
(even though it doesn't hurt at all) and he eases up.

Is this a bad habit for him to get into, even though he doesn't hurt me?
It seems like he enjoys this type of playing the most.

Yes, it's a bad habit.  They are "love bites" and are not too bad from a
small kitten.  But as the kitten gets older and stronger, it can do
damage.  Keep peroxide or alcohol handy.   MLB

My cat frequently attacks toes and fingers, but has never penetrated
the skin, though she is quite capable of ripping the head off a
gopher.  Sometimes it hurts, but she has never penetrated the skin, so
I have never needed peroxide or alcohol.   She mostly makes surprise
attacks with her claws entirely sheathed, so it is like being patted
with a velvet glove.  She surely can do damage, but she never has.

You have thicker skin than I have.  My cats teeth will make even a tiny
bite bleed.  Right now she is wearing Soft Paws to protect my skin from
her claws.   MLB

Although you know your cat, and she doesn;t hurt you, she may hurt someone
else, a neighbour's kid, or another person, who may not understand cat;s
friendly "attacks". Some people are just not finding our lil pet quarks
funny.

Can;t agree more. Stop every attempt to bite in its tracks, just the way you
do it already, by screaming in pain EVERYTIME he bites you, even if it
deosn;t hurt. Later on in life cat's bite can create some serious damage to
ones hand/other parts of body.

Thanks. Yelling in pain seems to work pretty well.

Lucky you!  My little Ella likes to grab my feet with her front paws,
bite them and "rabbit kick" them.  No amount of "ooowwwww oouch stoppit"
will make her stop!

When Tigger was a baby, he did that to my fecking face!  It hurt a whole
lot.
Generally, the cats know when to stop...

The rule of thumb I use is if it is cute now will be it still be cute
when the cat is 15 years old?

My cat can now rip the head off a gopher, yet when she attacks
my hands or feet, it is still cute.

That is not what I said.   Do you want this cat doing this behavior
when it is full grown?  If not then don't let it do it when it is a
kitten.

Kind of sucks when something you said is taken out of context, eh? I
hope it was a learning experience for you.....

This is just an observation on my part but, isn't it amazing how people
will read between the lines when it is convenient to them? I suppose
it's just another reason to do some bitching. I agree with you
Amy.....if you don't want your cats to learn "bad habits" stop them from
doing them when they are kittens. If you don't, you are going to have to
deal with the problems when they are adult cats. Then whose fault is it
going to be? Yours, for not stopping it when they were first learning
it, you gave them the signal that it was okay to do it. If you try to
change that signal when they are adults, you are not only sending mixed
signals to your cat(s), you are also causing your cat(s) to have anxiety
problems. We all know that this can lead to much bigger problems, and
ones that are a lot more costly.

Thanks for agreeing with me, if indirectly, jacquie!! In the post that
you're protesting about, I copied Amy's posting style. This is evident
in my reply to her post in which she complains about me not taking what
she said in contest. This was in response to the volleys she's fired
(first) against me in this forum and others. The fact that you found
indignation when I copied her posting style for the very reason to
incite response shows I was right on that front. Funny you didn't call
her when she took my posts out of contest. Perhaps if my username was
Barbara, or Nellie,  or.....

Don't even go there equalizer......because you are dealing with the
WRONG person when it comes to equal rights. I happen to volunteer for an
organization called, "Father's After Rights Equalization". I have no use
for women who feel that just because they are women, that they can cry
"wolf" whenever they "don't get their way".
Having said that, I must admit that although I find most of the posts
here informative, I don't always read all of them. If I chose not to
read them all, it is by choice, not by gender specifics. I usually read
the posts that I have replied to myself, and have more of an interest
in. I find that in most cases, people tend to carry things too far and
for too long. In certain cases, one must "get over it", as it were. I
have no interest in reading every little opinion about what does or does
not happen to Walmart employees. When something of substance happens,
then I will probably take a bigger interest in the subject. I also have
found that a lot of people will talk the talk, but when it comes to
action, I find it amazing how many suddenly "disappear".
Well, I guess you could say that I have had my rant for the day.
Happy New Year Everyone, and may all of your Furbabies bring you more
love and joy in 2005.

Enough said, no need to go any further. Nice spin, though!!!
