I am going to have to go out of town for two days and was wondering what to
expect from the cats (2) as far as litter box situation.  I have three boxes
already, they are in the basement and they can usually mess those up in less
than 24 hrs. I picked up two more and plan to put them out when I leave,
that would be a total of five. Is this going to be ok, or overkill.

Gary,

There is no such thing as overkill for litter boxes.  That is, unless you
like the odor of cat pee in a corner or closet. :)  Also, load them
particularly heavily/deeply with litter.  The urine will sink to the bottom
leaving more dry litter for scratching.

Also, I always cover mine with a good dose of Odor Destroyer - dry prior to
leaving. It is designed to absorb urine odor in outdoor kennels, etc.
Sprinkled over the litter box, it absorbs the ammonia odor and wetness to
help keep the box more acceptable to kitty for a longer period of time.

OK, Thanks Philip,  not enough time to order, will visit your site again
when I get back. Thanks for the advise and being up front. Cats have never
gone anywhere other than boxes so far. Never been away from them for more
than 8 hrs though and only had them for 4? months. Oh well, I'll find out
how they react. I have noticed that the litter has to be a certain depth, if
not deep enough the urine gets to the bottom and then crumbles when you try
to scoop it and end up using more litter in the long run.

Two days isn't very long.  Given all you've done so far I wouldn't fret it
too much.

Do concern youself with fresh water, however.  Several containers in case
one gets spilled or contaminated.

Too shallow is bad.  But I don't scoop anymore. [No flames please]  With 4
cats and 5 litter boxes scooping was too much work.  I find it much easier
and cheaper to buy low dust clay and dump the whole thing every 3-4 days.  I
have considered the automatic boxes but they are $200/each.  $1000 for
litter boxes is TOO much.  I just replace the ones I have about every 6
months.

Perhaps not originally, but most recently Mary Chapin Carpenter.  Before
her, it was Dire Straits.

Yeah, I've got a gravity feed water bowl for them. But usually have to clean
it every couple of days anyway. One cat uses it alot but she eats more dry
food as where the other cat eats more wet food and rarely see her at it.
Will leave some water downstairs and a couple other places.

Thanks, couldn't remember where I heard it.

Don't forget to leave plenty of WATER--water bowls are easily knocked down &
spilled.  They can live without food but not without water.
