Two suggestions -- the best I know of. Cosequin or Glyco-Flex. Either can
be bought through a veterinarian, or (a bit less expensively) through one of
the several online pet pharmacies. Cosequin is my choice, because it comes
in a capsule to be opened and sprinkled over canned food. Easy to use, and
very palatable. Glyco-Flex is a flavored tablet which is easy IF the cat
likes it; otherwise not so easy. Both of these are dietary supplements, and
have no known risks associated with them.
There are effective pain medications as well, which are a blessing when
needed, but have potentially serious side effects and the cat must have
regular blood work done to insure safety. I'd definitely try a supplement
for two or three months before turning to a pain medicine.
