I have read other posts in re: to fur loss on the back legs, but the
posts mainly pertained to female cats.
We have a male longhair that is licking and has hair loss on the
insides of his back legs.
He is a totally indoor kitty and here lately he has had more fur balls
hacked up than ever in his life.
Then I noted the hair loss.
He doesn't have fleas and he's eating the same chow as usual.
Does anyone have a clue as to what's happening here?

Contact allergy to what?  He's an indoor cat sitting, walking and
existing on the same surfaces he's been on all his life.

Could be a carpet, or litter. In fact it could be almost anything.  For
instance:    I bought myself a new pillow and I tossed the old one, minus
a pillow case on the floor.  It was some sort of foam.  The cat saw it and
took possession.  I left it for her as she seemed to really like sleeping
on it.  After a couple of weeks I noticed her stomach has lost a lot of
fur and the bare, pink skin was showing.  I immediately thought it might
be the new pillow so I discarded it.  Tummy fur grew back -- no further
trouble.  Good luck -- I hope you figure it out.  MLB

allergies occur randomly after exposure to the irritant.  Most people aren't
born with seasonal allergies, they just occur.  It could be the food, it
could be your cleaning supplies.

Or it could be boredom, and the cat is licking his legs because he has
nothing else to do that he wants to do.  I had a female cat do that once.
