Stop Cat From Scratching,,,, need help

I use to be part of this group about a year ago and left for my cats
where doing well and  I just did not have time.

But I have a problem and I am hoping those here can help me.

My cat, Gris, is 2 years old, Male, fixed, indoor/outdoor cat. He uses
his litter box fine and scratching post till recently. He is destroying
one of my new leather chairs. I am hoping to find a solution that allows
Gris to continue coming and going as he please but if I can't find a way
for him to stop attacking the chair, I see only 4 options, outdoor
kitty, get rid of kitty, allow chair to be ruined or declaw kitty.

Now before I am attack for listing last option, it is just that last
option if I can't retrain him, I am against it but the wife is clear on
this for we are getting the rest of the good leather furniture soon and
if Gris can't be stop/retrained something will be done.

Here is what I have tried, new scratching post in same room as chair,
about 3 feet away, with catnip in it to encourage him to use that. I
thought we had him retrained for I have been giving treats and praise
every time he even touches the post and I use a water bottle or kitchen
towel to scare away when even by the chair right now. I have even got
the double sided tape to put on chair and some nature's miracle spray to
discourage him from being around chair.

But every time I leave the house, he goes back to the chair, if I am
home he seems to behave. My wife works out of the house and try to keep
an eye on him but we can't watch him 24 hours a day.

We do have another cat, tj, and he is just as happy as can be with the
new post and has stopped his furniture attacks all together.

Please help me find a solution to Gris's problem before I am forced to
either keep him outdoors or worse. I personally don't want him to be an
outdoor only cat but I might not have a choice. (( by outdoor, he would
have access to garage and be allowed to sleep in garage at night if he
liked).

thanks,
J~

Two suggestions:  Buy a roll of sheet plastic and cut a piece large
enough to throw over the chair.  Leave it and only take it off when you
want to sit in it.  After awhile the cat should realize that chair is off
limits.

second:  Try Soft Paws.

Good luck.  MLB

I am concerned the softpaws would be a waste for his mentality in change
but I will try it if trap does not work. I am thinking one of those blue
camping tarps might do the trick.... and then see if I can get him on
post again or more consistently..

thanks for your suggestions, I will let the group know how it goes, I
just want a well behaved, indoor, with claws cat ;)

Try several scratching posts in one room.  Also, a flat or incline
scratching post.

I find Feliway has helped many of my cats to not
scratch where not welcome. (warning, Feliway is expensive
but it has worked for my cats)

Put a scratching post in every room.

Put a post *near* the chair to encourage him to use
it instead.

Sometimes the cat will need a mild tranquilizer as the
scratching may be a nervous reaction to something. (once
again, Feliway can sometimes help here as it has a calming
effect)

Sometimes... aluminum foil scares them off chairs if you put it on so that
it falls off & makes noise, cans with something that rattles,, in essense,
anything that would scare him if it fell or made noise when he touched the
chair...

I am currently doing the many scratching posts ( with catnip), the spray
and a outdoor blue tarp over chair ( for when I am not in room) and it
seems to be working, I am planning on doing the trap for another week or
so to make sure Gris as lost interest in the chair before he is allowed
in the house unsupervised.

thanks for all your suggestions,
J~

I have a good article on this, ripped from a cat mag last time at vet.
Have to find it, but basically it says cats scratch, so make it easy
and pleasant. Mail me at alotoluckscratchthis@yahoo.com (you can
figure that out) and I'll send it.

well so far the training seems to be working. Here is what was done...
spray bottle used when Gris showed to much interest in chair. I put a
blue camping tarp over it at night and that double sided take on areas
he already used. A new scratching post with a lot of cat nip has been
placed near by and I have seen him and Tj( other cat) use it daily. It
has been 2 days with no tarp but still tape and water bottle and I see
no new marks.

I want to thank you all for your help and I just hope I have Gris
trained well enough so when the other pieces come next week, we will
have no new marks.

thanks again,
J~
