Hello,

I am about to setup a Marine Fish Tank in my hall, about 30 inches wide, and
24 inches deep, sitting on a 24 inch deep stand.
Do you think the tank will drive my cats nuts and really annoy them?  I
really want it, but will avoid if it is cruel on the cats.

Regards,

Gary.

They'll probably think it's interactive TV ;-)

Mine spend hours watching the fish, sometimes batting at them.  One of
my bigger cichlids comes over to play with the cats sometimes.

Ooh!  Do get it!  Our cat *adores* our fish tank.  I don't think he
actually knows what they are, he just knows that they scatter when he
bats the glass! :o)  It provides hours of entertainment for him.

Our cats *love* our fish tanks. Just make sure your canopy and stand are
sturdy enough to have a cat napping on top.

Now thats what i call a fish tank! Guess your cats find it nice and warm
up there, quite comical really!
Kitten hasn't noticed our fish yet.  Thought he had the other day but
turns out he was just trying to get at one of the kids toys that was
next to it.
As for Macavity had you just woken him or was him flashing his teeth for
the camera!

It'll take a while.  It took Macavity until at least a year old, and the
little 'uns just know there's a big black cabinet in the livingroom.

I think he'd just woken up and was doing a heeeeuge kitten-yawn.  He
does have quite impressive teeth.

Thanks. In the middle of winter I've seen as many as 5 cats on top of
the tank. It gets quite warm because of the lights and there's a heater
vent nearby: kitty paradise!

My, those are big teeth! He's a cutie.

That's exactly why Macavity likes ours - he goes up there for the
warmth! Mind you, the condensations gets pretty bad, so he always ends
up with damp fur.

Oh, and he *adores* the fish food!

He is a gorgeous cat - but then I'm biased!  He's got really silky fur.

He's in a bit of a huff with me today, because of the kittens.

Very nice fish tank!  I myself have six tanks of my own but only four are
working but my kitty hasn't jumped and napped on top of mine yet.  She's
watched the fish but never went on top of it.  Guess there's always a time
and place eh?  Mind you I don't have the great looking canopy like you do,
it's really nice!  I've always been told that fish tanks make great "cat TV"
LOL!
Cheers,
Halina

Those four cats are gorgeous.   I had a small tank for Princess (RB) and
she spent a lot of time trying to get the top off.  MLB

They do. One of our cats, Rufous, gets constantly teased by a couple of
fish. I swear these two fishes look at him and start swimming up and
down the glass, you can almost hear them saying "nya nya... you can't
get to us", while Rufous desperately paws at the glass... :)

Your cats will love the fishtank and the fish will not be bothered in the
least by your cats.  Please remember that you must cycle your tank with only
a few hardy fish (like swordtails or danios or gouramis) for the first month
or so - otherwise, an ammonia spike and then a nitrite spike will probably
kill some of your fish  This is the reason so many people give up on fish
tanks - their fish die one by one after about two to three weeks.  Then add
fish slowly.  If you have any questions, come to alt.aquaria or
rec.aquaria.freshwater.misc and we will help you.  A good way to pick out
fish is to go to the store and make a list of fish you like, come home and
do some research and then if you find that the fish are compatable with your
other fish and water chemistry, substrate, food, filtering methods, then go
back and buy the fish.  Do not count on the folks at the large pet chain
stores - they will sell you fish that will eat each other or otherwise be
incompatable.
Anyway, if you already knew all this, sorry!
Have fun setting up your tank.

Although off-topic, you gave some very bad advice on fish type for
tank cycling.  The OP mentioned a MARINE tank - and swordtails, danios
or gouramis won't last in that envirnoment, considering they are FRESH
water fish, not MARINE (aka salt water) fish!

Dont worry, I have had ten or so fresh water aquariums - so I wont be adding
those fish!.  I think he made very simple mistake, sometimes I never read
the whoel post and answer with a completely daft answer :)

No problemo!
I have just handed ALL responsibility for my marine tank to the local fish
shop, they going to be visiting me each Saturday morning to maintain, clean,
add rocks and fish etc.

So now I have NO chance of making any mistakes! :)
