My wife and I will be finishing our basement in the spring, and where the
litter boxes are will be in an enclosed room with a cat door.  There are
windows that allow light to get in now.  I am wondering if I need to put a
window in a wall to allow light to get inside, or will the cat's sense of
smell allow them to know where the litter boxes are without them having any
accidents.  I know cats cannot see in complete darkness, and don't know how
much light will get in this new room through the cat door.

Thanks,

Eddie G

You could experiment by blanking out all light from the window you now have.
That would give you the information you need.  My guess is that there will
be no problem.  Duffy is blind, and he has no difficulty locating the litter
boxes.  Holly is sighted, but I do not leave any lights on at night.
Likewise, she easily finds the litter boxes (and, for that matter, both
locate toys, food, my bed, etc. with no problem even when there is no
light).

Just keep a small night light on all the time.

I hadn't even thought about that.  I already do keep night lighs in the
hallway, and they probably provide just enough light so that Holly can
probably use them as light even when she is in the locations with the litter
boxes.  On the other hand, Duffy is blind and functions almost like a
sighted cat even in his world of total darkness.  He's a little gem!

Thanks!  I'm almost as bad as those proud grandmothers who carry huge stacks
of photos of their grandchildren for friends to admire.
