A trip to the vet seems the obvious answer. One of our cats was recently
suffering from something similar, and the vet prescribed antibiotics to
clear it up.

It could be cat acne and there are a number of possible causes include food
allergies ( as it was in our case ) or if the cat eats or drinks from
plastic bowls etc. Sometimes there are litlte black dots on the fur, almost
like coal dust or flea droppings.
In our case, it was caused by Science diet 'Natures Best' - it was a little
bit greasy to handle but once we removed it from the diet, the acne cleaned
up within 7 days.

If you know in advance what the advice is going to be, why
do you bother to ask?

Sounds like acne. Make sure you don't use plastic bowls, ceramic, metal
and glass are ok. They should also be cleaned regularly, of course. If
this is not the case, it might be a food allergy. Look for foods without
corn in the formula.

One of our cats had acne under his chin.
Don't know what caused it, but a couple of washings with anti-bacterial
hand soap cleared it up.
It hasn't come back.
