Hi

I have 2 cats who are both coming up on 15 years old.  The Vet has
suggested that I try to get them to drink more water.  She suggested
possibly getting one of the cat drinking fountains that you see in pet
stores now.  Does anybodty have any experience with these?  Do they
actually make the cats drink more then out of a normal bowl?  What brand
would you suggest?  I went to Petsmart and saw they carry 2 different
brands.  Thanks for any info

I have one (Drinkwell) and I can't tell if the cats drink from it,
or it just evaporates faster because the water moves.  What I've
found effective is to place several sources of water in various
places. I have the Drinkwell in the kitchen, but I also have a
coffee cup of water that I keep fresh in my bedroom, one (also
coffee cup) in the living room and another in the family room
downstairs. They all get drank from. Move them around in places
where you know your cats play or hang out, and if they find a
source of water, almost guarenteed they will drink (or sample from,
drink later).

ps - Drinkwell fountains are very hard to keep clean.

I keep an extra bowl of water in the bedroom. The cats seem to think this is
special water. They gather around it in the morning until I refill it.

Our ginger can who will use the glasses of water in the bathroom, will run
over to you if you have a glass of water in your hand and will wait until
you set it down somewhere, next thing there is a ginger head in the glass,
drinking away.

She probably thinks she is stealing the water

I love your website. I've been browsing through the "cat of the
week" pics and still many to go. lol What a lovely bunch you have.
And all with names that start with S. :) Is there a story behind
that?

Sylvie was my first. I named all of the others to start w/ "S" so they would
be like a family. Glad you like my cats. They are such a joy (most of the
time!).

I have the Drinkwell with the large attachable reservoir. I'm very satisfied
and so is my cat. Hard to judge about the quantity consumed versus a bowl,
but I got it to optimize the chances of more consumption.

I bought the Petmate first and did not have a good experience with that
pump, but others in this group swear by them.

We have this one:
http://www.petguys.com/-029695248700.html
it's great and the cats love it! Make sure to order filter replacements
and wash it throughly every couple of weeks or so. BTW, that is the best
price you'll find anywhere for that product.

We have the Petmate one and our 8 year old will only drink from it, our 5
year old does not use it, preferring instead to drink from the glass of
water on the bathroom floor.

My only comment about the petmate is that because we have water with a very
high calcium content, a good weekly cleaning is essential. Change the filter
every 6 to 8 weeks.

My cat will only drink out of the tap(!) - she drinks tons - every time I go
into the bathroom.

I looked into fountains for that reason but could only find ones that have
to plug into the mains?  Do any of the ones mentioned run on batteries?

I'm in the UK

Thanks

I have a Drinkwell that my cats do drink from when it's clean, but they
seem to prefer the metal bowl in the bedroom or my glass. If you get an
automatic, be sure to wash it thoroughly once a week rather than just
topping it off. The internal parts can become slimy without adequate
cleaning.
