cat urine smell

One of my cats peed on the rug in one room, and I just read in another
discussion group that when the urine dries, crystals form and that is what
smells, so even though you smell it, it doesn't mean the cat peed again.  I
also read that if the urine went into the carpet pad and floor panels, they
HAVE to be replaced to get the smell out.  Is any of this true?  What if I
drenched the carpet in Nature's Miracle, and get the pads and flooring wet
too?  Or baking soda left on the carpet for a while?

Thanks,

Eddie G

Eddie G,

The last time my 8 year old female cat accidently urinated on the
carpet, I used Arm & Hammer's 'Pet Fresh'.  I first soaked up the excess
urine with paper towels.  I then liberally sprinkled the Pet Fresh over
the spot on the carpet.  Waited about hour and then vacuumed it up.
Just to make sure there would not be any smell, I sprinkled some more of
the Pet Fresh and let it sit there for about half a day before vacuuming
it.  The urine smell was completely gone.

I hope this helps.
