Dangerous cat collars

Dear all

I am trying to find out what are the safest cat collars around. Our 3 year
old cat Chorley has now twice managed to get his collar snagged; and I
believe and in trying to remove the collar got his front paw through the
collar so it has stretched around his neck and front torso.  On both
occasions I have been around and managed to remove the tight binding collar
much to my and the cats distress.
The first time this happened I walked upstairs to find the cat rolling
around, I thought he was playing, to my horror his collar was trapped
tightly around his neck and chest. I dread to think what would of been the
outcome if I hadn't of been around.
The collar in question has a 2 inch elastic strip which should allow the cat
to release but the collar had got so tight that the elastic was fully
tightened, leaving him unable to remove it. We immediately binned that
collar. Now 3 months later the same thing has happened on a similar collar
and again I was around to help him out.

Chorley is micro-chipped but needs his collar for going out as been a black
haired cat he wears a fluorescent reflective collar for extra visibility to
any motorists that pass our street.

I am tempted to remove his collar altogether but for identification and
visibility purposes I think he needs to wear one for going out.

Does anyone have any suggestions for safe collars.
Thanks for your help

In the past I have used collars with a pull-apart safety fastening, so if
the collar gets caught anywhere it simply pulls apart and falls off.

However, since my cat has lost three of these in the last 4 months, I've
simply used a 3/8" wide strip of elastic cut to length and sewn together,
with my phone number written on in ballpoint ink..! Not the most elegant
of collars but she's not lost it yet ;-)

Matilda wears an elasticized/nylon collar that glows in the dark, with a
"bake in the oven" ID tag. She's been wearing it for a year and a half.
She's had one mishap - was up the tree in the yard, lost her balance and
fell. The collar hooked a twig but she just slipped out of it.

I tried the collar you describe but there wasn't enough stretch for my
liking. I've also tried the "break-away" variety, but just looking at them
seemed to cause them to release and get lost. :c)
