I have just adopted 2 beautiful 8 week old kittens, who are settling in
well. They are using the litter tray, but they never seem to manage to
cover over their poop with litter, although they do try, but tend to
send the litter in a random direction. This is quite smelly so it would
be good if I could help them to learn how to bury their poop in the
litter. Has anybody got any advice as to how to do this?
Thanks,
Alex

I've been trying to figure that out too. My 14 year old has in
recent years forgotten how to bury her stuff. I think it was about
the time I got a Littermaid. The Littermaid is now long gone,
the habit still remains.

you can keep an eye on them, and when they go, "show" them how to cover it,
by taking their paw and lightly using it to move the litter over the poop.
only use positive reinforcement on this one, or you might teach them that
using the box is a bad thing.

Kittens are normally taught things like this from their mother, at least
that's what's always happened in my experience. Did you know their mother,
and did she cover her tracks so to speak..? What kind of litter are you
using..? At the shelter where I volunteer, we always use grit type litter
for kittens, and a wood based one for adults.

Now and then my cat doesn't cover her poop. So it's a bit smelly, no big
deal. I just flip it into the toilet and flush. After all, what do people do
when they leave smellies? They flush the toilet! :c)

I've found that since I started using Iams cat food, my cat's poop doesn't
stink.
