Stair carpet being torn to shreds

My cat frequently claws at the stair carpet, fraying it at either side.   He
seems uninterested in anything else we give him to claw at.

Can anyone recommend a way to stop this, perhaps there is something that can
be sprayed on the stairs to stop it.

Thanks.

Tape some aluminium foil to the affected parts while you find a
scratching post that he likes then douse that in catnip. Shouldn't be
more than a few days before he switches over.

The Feliway that Victor mentioned (from what I understand of the
product) is kitty "Valium"; unless he's clawing there from stress I
don't see that doing any good (?)
