I am at my wits end with a new kitty i got and want to get rid of fleas
without actually going to the vet and pay $50 for a flea treatment.
What can I do

The safest way is to go to the vet. If you don't get rid of the fleas,
they will suck enough blood to cause the kitten to become anemic and
possibly die. Spend the $50.

I agree 1000% - if you love your kitty, spend the money. He's worth it and
a thousand times more.

Give the kitten a bath with soapy water, use a mild soap like ivory.
Start in the head and work yourself towards the tail, making sure to
avoid the face completely. Soap will kill all fleas and wash off most
flea eggs. You might have to repeat a couple of times. I recommend you
get a product from your vet for long-term use though, we use Revolution
and are quite happy with it. NEVER, EVER buy over-the-counter flea
products. They are dangerous and many cats have suffered health problems
after using them.

not sure what flea treatment is 50$. frontline and advantage and revolution
are all under 10$. if your not careful, the fleas will suck the kitten dry
and actually kill it. pay the money, get the flea treatment, or find a new
home for the kitten, cause honestly, fleas are the cheapest problem you'll
ever have with cats.

With a kitten that young don't fool around with self treatments. You
could make it sick or worse. It needs to see the vet to get the proper
dosage of the medication. Advantage, Frontline, and Revolution are good
but NOT for kittens that young without vet assistance. DO NOT use any
over the counter flea preparations such as Hartz. SEE THE VET.

Revolution is safe for use on kittens over 6 wks. in the kitten strength.
Advantage I think is OK for kittens over 8 wks. The dosage is determined by
the weight of the kitten. I believe you need a Rx for Revolution but
Advantage is available online. Just make sure you get the appropriate
dosage.
That said, if you haven't had the kitten to the vet you really should take
him anyway for a general check up and to start shots, worming if necessary,
to be checked for ear mites etc.

I hope that by now you've already taken the kitty to the vet. Where I currently
live flies are a problem. A number of years ago a kitten I had ended up with
flies and after bombing my place, flie bathes, etc I gave up on all the stuff my
vet gave me and went to the store and bought a flie comb. I would comb the cats
three times a day ( morning, after work and before going to bed) for ten or so
minutes. At first I would get 25+ flies each time I combed them. After a few
days the number started to drop and finally went to zero. As a positive side
effect both of the kittens grew to like being combed.
