It sounds as if it might be an infection. If your kitty plays with
other cats (or gets into a fight) then this is quite likely. Bite
marks can be very hard to identify because the puncture marks heal
very quickly while the infection starts to grow under the skin - quite
often there is no pain associated with the swelling either.
If she has no contact with other cats then this is unlikely. Dogs
(generally) do not create clean puncture wounds like cats and it would
be far more obvious - especially if the dog is big!
Either way, if it has not improved after 24/48 hours I would take her
to a vet...
Troy.
The vet is at a loss. The lump was caused by joint fluid. 2 xrays showed
3 lumps all together as well as the bones at the joints are malformed.
Samples are being sent off to the lab for more workup. And the vet says it
could be one of three things.
Worse case: Cancer
Possble case: rhuemitoid athritis
another possible case: Can't recall - but my guess was the equivilant to
tennis elbow - although the vet said that usually when they rupture the
joint ball and the fluid leaks out you see it evenly dispursted up and down
the muscle - not in lumps and swollen areas.
Treatment: shot of corison to help elivieate the swelling, 7 days of batril
antibiotic and they'll call me next week with results from the lab.
Cost - $180.
I'm getting to the point where I can't afford my animals any more. I've
spent over $2000 since the beginning of this year on vet bills. This is
killing me finacially.

As I mentioned in another post (can't remember if it was this or another cat
group), is there not affordable cat insurance in U.S.? I never got it
before moving to U.K. - and paid dearly for it - so I don't know, but I only
pay a little over ?8 for both my kitties now (about $12), and there is only
a yearly ?35 excess on it, and any other fees are paid up to ?40,000 a year
(something like that), even on ongoing conditions like arthritis, diabetes,
etc. I highly recommend anyone with a kitty (or any pet, really) look into
this, because I know I couldn't afford even ?100 right now, and I couldn't
see not being able to take care of my kitties if anything went wrong. I
feel really bad, because at least if we had insured our last kitty, there's
a chance he might be alive today, but we didn't and had no way to get the
thousands needed for an operation to try and save him. The vet 'reassured'
us he was probably too far gone anyway, but I would have felt so much better
if at least we had exhausted every option before having to have him put to
sleep. So, to avoid having to make horrible choices like that if your pet
is in an accident or gets sick or whatever, do look and see if affordable
pet insurance is available in your area; it could literally be a lifesaver.

By the way, jayjay, meant to say as well that I hope it's not a worst case
scenario, and that your kitty makes a full recovery!

Sorry to hear it's such a frustrating prognosis - I'd be interested to
know what the results from the lab show and what happens over the next
few days of treatment. I can certainly sympathise with your vet bill
woes, I have also spent a fortune...hang in there and let's hope for
the best outcome...

So far - we are on day 3 of treatment, and the swelling hasn't gone down at
all yet. :-( I'll post again when I hear back from the vet next week.
Thanks for the support.

Sorry to hear that. :( Hope you get Sabrina sorted out soon, and that she's
not in too much pain meanwhile.
Hugs and Purrs,

thankfully she doesn't appear to be in any pain. She was out chasing
gecko's earlier and jumped on the counter earlier oday.
