Hi all

Please help......I just had my kitty put down very suddenly and I am not so
sure I know why.

Friday and saturday he was fine. Sunday I came home on the night and he was
just sitting there not moving. His breathing was hard and fast and he had
lost loads of weight - this would have been over a while I guess but I just
did not notice because..........well, I just didn't.

I took him to the hospital and they said he was very dehydrated. He went on
a saline drip overnight but there was no improvement. It transpired he was
severely diabetic and had very high glucose levels in his urine but even
when they provided insulin for him, he didn't really respond. All he wanted
to do was drink and wee.

The vet said that there was no improvement and I had him put down but I feel
it was unfair that it all happened so quickly.  The vet actually said she
didn't know what was wrong and it was probably a virus or bacterial
infection.  He tested negative for FIV.

I am heartbroken by his departure from the world. I have cried buckets and I
feel responsible. I loved him so much and now he's gone and I can't help
feeling that I could have done more.  The vet just seemed to give up but I
thought they loved kittie's too ?

Please help put me out my misery. I am so sad right now.

Thanks

I am very sorry for you and your situation. You must be devastated. I
can offer no answers - I can only ask: why didn't the vet perform an
autopsy on the cat? This sudden incorrigible illness must have been an
enigme to the vet as well... and it might have given you some answers.
Sympathetic thoughts,

What I usually do is have an autopsy done to convince me that
whatever happened to that cat can't effect the remaining cats in my
house.

You have my sympathy.

Hi Jamie-
I am so sorry for the loss of your kitty. I recently had a a baby kitten
that passed as well. Wednesday he was great and by Friday he was not really
moving and was super skinney. This being over 3 days. When I got him, he was
found in a storage shed and covered in oil and all the other nasty things
that come in a storage shed, not to mention we didn't even know how old he
was. I called the vet Friday afternoon and she told me to give him some
kitten replacement milk. By Saturday night at 10 he was even worse. He had
diarrhea horribly but I was told not to really be concerned until he started
throwing up. I ended up in the emergency room 10:30 sat night with him
hooked up to an IV and to my horror, him throwing up. She gave him the IV
twice and tested him for several different diseases which came up negative.
I was sent home with albon to stop the diarrhea and throwing up and an
electolyte to give him to hydrate him more. If i would have known how much
he was going to suffer over the next two days i would have had him put down
also. He ended up dying on me 5am monday morning and i know he suffered
horribly. My vet was unavailable for an emergency visit. So all i could do
was hold him. I don't know that there could have been more than i could have
done for him but i feel really guilty and depressed and of course the all
famous question we ask outselves when something like this happens "what
could i have done differently/better/more of?". Our guess is the he might
have had coccidia but the vet says she really doesn't know what it might
have been. I got the same line as well "it was probably a virus or bacterial
infection"  It really is unfair especially when we are saving them from
terrible conditions. If i could have done it all over again i would have put
my little baby down instead of  him having to suffer. I know this probably
doesn't offer any condolences but if the chance was there our cats had the
same disease/infection as least you know that yours didn't have to suffer.
Once again I feel for you, you have my sympathy.

[snip]

That must've been a traumatic experience for you, Brandie, witnessing your
kitten going through all that.  You said you found him in the shed covered
in oil and stuff.... Did he become sick soon after that?  Did the vet ever
suggest your pet might've ingested a toxic substance, hence the throwing up,
etc?

Thank you to all that replied.  My sympathy to all in the same boat.  The
pain is not as raw now but I still miss him like hell.  I am going to plant
a tree in his memory at the weekend.

I can't believe Brandie's kitty had the same trauma trying to get
treatment.......

Im sorry for your Loss Jamie,

My 10 year old cat Scratch passed away last week with the same symptoms, she
was diagnosed with diabeties, with kidney failure an dpancrease falure,
dehydrated, and had a fluid build up around her lungs..

The doctor explained that her glucose level and urea level was so high it
shut her kidneys down. But that didnt explain the fluid build up around the
lungs which he said would have been from some type of infection.

She was in overnight, on a drip, looked a fair bit healthy being rehydrated,
meowed at me in a way to thank me..
we were contemplating putting her down if her conditioned worsened, but her
kidneys may have started up again but she would require insulin shots for
her diabeties.. we were prepared to do it, but unforunetly she passed away
at the vets over the night, the vet had drained a lot of fluid around 100mls
from around her lungs that night. Unfortunetly, she passed away in the
morning before we got their to see how she was..

yes very sad when you loose a friend you have had for 10 years since a
kitten.. About a week later i am still very sad over it...

Cats sometimes develop diabeties in their old age which is iratic unlike
humans, meaning their pancrease can start and stop or crease small amounts
of insulin which requires constant monitering...

I cant really be more specific that wha the vet explained to me last week
:-(

but keep your chin up and wipe away those tears, just think of how your
littke kittey would want you to feel..

regards
Nathan
