I have a neighborhood cat that likes to sneak into my garage and sit on car.
Wintertime, summertime, anytime. The cat gets muddy prints all over the
hood, and has also scratched the paint. I have chased it away 3 times, but
it returns late almost every night. Although there are 4 other cars that
park next to my car ( also in garages), it likes my car.
What can I do to chase this cat away from my garage?
I am getting very annoyed and may do something harmful to this darn cat.
Thank you in advance.

If you're not a troll (or even if you are), think very carefully before
you advocate cruelty to cats in a cat group.

Speaking as a cat lover / owner, I would say that Vito is showing good
restraint, rather than advocating cruelty. A lot of people would be happy to
try to kill the cat without bothering to find an alternative, and be proud
of it. Whenever I talk with a neighbour and get those 'anti-cat' vibes
between the lines. I recommend a water spray or a handful of soil (earth,
not sh.t) thrown at my cats. Not everybody loves cats. Live and let live.

I am not a troll, nor do I hate cats. I like animals, but this one is
upsetting me. It is also annoying and will cost me money for scratched
paint.
I was hoping for an inexpensive solution. It comes out at night and runs
whenever I go near it. I can't catch it, so I can't find the owner.
Will soap or mothballs work?
Animal officer sounds good.

Cats, being vain, and fanatical about cleanliness, hate getting
wet, and hate getting dirty considerably more.
Spray with a hose, or hurl soft mud at it.

Best option. Keep the garage door closed. That's what it's there for. If
you can't get it shut because of the junk, contact www.freecycle.org/ and
get rid of some of the junk.
Use a car cover on your car. They also help to keep off the dust and you
won't need to wash the car as frequently.
There is a thing called a ScatMat that you plug into an electric outlet and
place on the hood of the car and it will slightly shock the cat, driving it
away. It's not cheap.
Find the owner of the cat and ask them to keep their cat inside. Explain
that many cats have been injured by climbing into the engines of cars on
cold days and at start up, you get mashed up kitty. Explain that many
diseases exist outdoors that will make their cat sick. Explain that many
folks aren't as nice as you and would want to harm their cat.
Use a humane trap and trap the cat and call Animal Control to come and pick
it up. Then place signs around your neighborhood directing the owner to
pcik their animal up from AC, where they will pay a fine for letting it run
loose. Laws regarding cats running loose vary, so check to see if it's
illegal to begin with before trying this strategy.

From what I can tell, such laws are the exception rather than the rule and
only a few local authorities in one or two countries have such laws.

Hmm, same thing I suggested to the guy who wanted to keep the cat off
the table... get one of those battery operated toy motion-sensor dogs;
the cat jumps up, the dog immediately barks shocking the cat, the cat
runs away. By the time the batteries have run down the cat won't jump up
there anymore.
Scares the crap out of the neighbours too.

A fake dog sensor is a great idea!!!!
Cheap, scary AND wakes the neighbors!!!
Thank you.

I had a similar problem so I cleared some space up on my work bench and put
a couple of folded towels there and about a foot away I placed food and
fresh water. Now the cat sleeps on the towels and not the car. This worked
great but they have sortta spilled over into the house. Seven in all..
