Kittens 10 weeks old, one kitten follows mama cat into the woods, mama cat
comes back alone. Two days later kitten returns, stays a day then the mama
cat repeats the process. Kitten doesn't come back. Today mama cat does the
same with remaining two. Is she upset with them about something or does she
figure it's time to have an empty nest?

We have not found this happening with our cats -they just avoid feeding them
when they become older; but otherwise still give them an occasional lick.!

Seems a little odd to me too. We have only had one litter, as most of our
cats have been fixed. I think our kittens are about 12 weeks old, and their
mother doesn't want to feed them. She gets up and walks away when they try.
I don't think she could get away with taking them out ino the woods even if
she tried. They would all run indoors at feeding time. I have noticed that
she seems to try to hide from the kittens!

It is fairly normal for a mother cat to wean their kittens, at 9 to 10
weeks, a stray is usually in heat again when the kittens are around 10
weeks old, its so sad for these feral cats, they come in heat and some
have kittens every 4 to 5 months. I have a stray (that I can't trap)
that is having kittens every 5 months. It has to be very hard on her.
The best thing you can do, is "if possible" trap her and get her spayed.
Also "if" you can trap the kittens find them homes, believe me I KNOW
it's not a fun or easy thing to do, I've been doing if for several years
now.
To many people just get cats, are not happy with them for what ever
reason and let them out to keep having babies. Sorry, just a pet peeve
of mine.
