Legal selling age of kittens in PA

I bought a kitten in a pet shop.  They claim she is now 4.5 weeks old and I
can not pick her up for 2 weeks.  Hmm.  If there was a legal age for them to
sell them, wouldn't it be 8 weeks?  I found that the law in Pennsylvania
restricts selling of fowl that is under 8 weeks.  Nothing about cats or
dogs.  Does anyone know why this particular shop would do this?  They are
now eating solid foods and the shop does not offer a health guarantee on
their cats.  I feel she would be a lot better being raised by me than being
kept in a cage most of the day. Thanks for any insight.

I don't know about legalities, but a kitten should be with the mother
until *at least* 8 and preferably 10-12 weeks.

Well there is not much that can be done about that since they were just
dumped off on the pet stores door step.

I'm very sorry to hear that. Is there no rescue shelter or similar in the
area..? Here in the UK we have branches of Cats Protection  in most areas
of the country.

I do hope your kitten turns out to be ok, and gives you many years of love
:-)

They are still being weened from the mother at this age, although should be
eating on their own as well.  Most shelters will generally not permit
adoption until at the very least 7 weeks of age.
