My SO and I recently recived a cat. It's a 7 month old neuterd male.
The problem I'm running into is that I work evenings and late nights,
and need to sleep in the morning. Of course a kitten would never let
this happen.
He likes to let you sleep till about 6am, then he will whine and run
around like an insane race car (getting into things that he normaly
won't get into), and generaly be a bad cat.
Even when I get up and play with him, and feed him, he still acts bad,
and whines. This goes on till about noon.
Other then that he is a very good cat, he doesn't get on stuff, he
doesn't whine. Any ideas why he would act this way at this time, and
how I can stop it (or move it to a better time)?
My guess is that the birds outside our windows get his attention and
he is acting up because of them...

I'm sorry but I don't think I can help but to tell you you now have entered
the teenage years - they don't listen! :) Have you tried having a talk
with him (yes I'm serious, I did it once, they actually seemed to listen).
So much for being nocturnal creatures.
Good luck, if i can think of anything constructive and helpful I will post
back. Maybe others can come up w/ideas?

Yep, I've talked to him. He listens, then continues.

He's not being bad, he's being a cat. Get him a playmate to keep him
entertained.

That's not allowed by our apartment. When we move we will get another
cat, but till then he is an only child.

the minute you give him any sort of attention, you have played into his
hand. He wants you to wake up and play with him because he is bored.
Ignore him. Completely. If he gets very obnoxious, scold him, but then
ignore him. Lock him out of the bedroom if need be. Close the curtains so
he can't see the birds while your sleeping. EVENTUALLY he will get the
message. If you don't, you'll have a 12 yr old cat doing the same thing :)
as JoJo said, you've entered the teenage years. Enjoy it.
