I see these very expensive scratching posts at Petsmart.
I was thinking of making my own.
Does carpet really provide a scratching post for the cats? These things
they sell look like fun toys for the cat but do they really provide a
scrathin post. I thought they do that to sharpen and clean their claws.
Would a soft wooden post be a better choice? I dont see any made of just
wood. Some had rope wrapped around which seemed a better idea the carpet.
Your thoughts appreciated.

Out cats love sissal rope posts. We have dozens of them around the house.

Yes, of course it does.

Uhhh...is that a question or a statement?
> I thought they do that to sharpen and clean their claws.
Nahhh.. they just do that to pass time, until they learn to read and
write.

Not really, cats prefer to be whacked in the head with the carpet
covered ones they are softer.

Maybe a better idea, but you have to beat the cats extra hard with the
ones that are rope wrapped.

Yes but rope is better. Our cat has a cat tree which has carpet and sisal
rope. We haven't finished it yet so there's a substantial wooden area as
well. He scratches the carpet, he scratches the rope most. I don't think
I've seen him scratch the wood at all.
