Cat urine in carpet

I hope someone can help.  We had new carpet installed in our
family room and our 15 year old cat urinated on it.  He's
never done this before so we think it was caused by changing
the family room's floor covering.  I got a black light and
found the urine spots, sprayed lots of urine erase stuff on
the spots - didn't really work.  Got a professional carpet
cleaning crew in to clean a 3 foot area.  Extracted cleaning
solution smelled of urine when they were through.  Still
smelled urine days later.  Pulled back the carpet, cut out
the padding (it smelled) and sprayed the carpet backing with
the urine erase stuff.  Still smells.  I'm at my wits end.
Can someone give me some ideas for getting rid of the smell?
Thanks, Bea

no clue, here (I've never had that particular problem) but the urination
on the carpet, IMHO could be caused by the "new carpet" smell or that of
the glue or underpadding, your cat thinks his piss smells better... it's
not likely to be a lifelong habit.

But I've heard that vinegar does wonders in some circumstances.

i got a spray from the vet to clean my carpets and it worked well and
discouraged Grizzy from doing it again.

If you live in the US - go to your local petsmart or other such pet
supply store and purchase "Natures Miracle"   It is the best thing
I've found that will take out the oder in the carpet.

Other tips.
a solution of Vinager and baking powder. (arm & hammer stuff, can
never remember if its powder or soda - but the stuff in the yellow
box).

Biological laundry detergent.   Actually, I've even found that after
cleaning with Nature's miracle or w/ vinager, I'll go back over the
spot with some diluted laundry detergent and clean, then rinse well
with water.

I use my wet/dry vac, dump water on the spot then soak back up with
the vac as quick as possible.

my vet recomended 'anti-icky-poo', it is a bacteria that eats the urine. it
is used in forensics for oder removal of dead body smells, skunk smells and
other organic oder causing bacteria. here is the link(copy and paste in

-Clean the spot with vinegar, so it kills the smell enough not only for you
but cat as well.
-when dry use Downy fabric conditioner to kill the smell leftover.
-When dry, rub some dry cat food into the spot so cat doesn;t come back and
do the number 1 there again.
