Pooping beside litter box ARGH!

So, my wife has about had it, and I can't blame her.

Our neutered male cat squatted inside the litterbox to pee, but managed
to get it outside the box about 1/2 the time.  So, I went out and found a
bin with higher walls than his old litter box, but it occupies a little
less floor area.  He pees in it with no problem.  But, now he only poops
right beside the litter box.  Before the new litter box, he would only do
that when it was dirty.  Now, it can have absolutely fresh litter and
he'll still do it.

Any advice?  The most recent idea is to keep him outside, but he's been
an indoor cat all his life and doesn't have his front claws.  So, don't
want to move to that unless it's absolutely necessary.

He's about 13 years old.

HELP!

thx.

I think your poor cat is having some kind of health problem
and should be taken to the Vet  ASAP and he needs all the
love, help and understanding you can give him.

Cats will do this as the result of a behavioural or a medical problem.
Seeing as your cat is a senior, I suggest you have him seen by a vet.

Poor little guy.  I agree with taking him to the vet.  Since he's an
older cat, could be a medical problem.  Since he's always been an
indoor cat, it'd be too cruel to let him outside now - especially
being declawed.
My cats have never deliberatly gone outside the litter box - but
sometimes they may track a little out accidentally.  So my solution
was to go to Home Depot and get a big carpet square to put the litter
box on.  You can get them for $5-6 and that way it will at least make
it bearable - in that it won't mess up your floors or carpet,
especially since he's going right beside the box.
Hope you can work it out.

You can also add a second litter box. Perhaps he's a little uncertain about
the new box. Is he squatting to poop -outside- of the box, or does it look
like he's just sort of trailing over the box with the poo like he used to
with the pee? With a slightly smaller box, it may be -too- small now for him
to poop comfortably. Head back to the home storage area of Target or
Wal-Mart and look at their rubbermaid storage containers, the clear plastic
ones. Most of the ones around $7 make ideal litterboxes, being about six
inches high (enough to keep kitty from peeing over the edge) and probably a
foot and a half by two, two and a half feet. Some people have success as
well with the much taller containers, particularly for cats that like to
cover thoroughly and end up kicking half the litter out in their struggles.

But if all this is new, your first stop should be your vet for a physical
exam of your senior kitty.

I had a slight problem with my large male cat, who wieghs about 25 pounds, who
is too big for some litter boxes.
He likes to face the back of the box when he does his turds, and, if you have a
box that is not long enough, the turds will fall out on the floor, rather than
into the box.
