The best way to avoid giving your cat diabetes is the same best way to avoid
it in humans. Play with your cat often to keep it active. Force yourself
to dedicate at least half an hour of your time to it just as people should
do with their families.
If the cat loves to eat or you love to reward it stay away from the
fattening treats unless you really NEED to give treat it after some
upsetting experience such as a dose of medicine. If you can't RESIST
treating your cat every time you see it, instead of giving it a lot, give it
only a spoon of cat food at a time, 10 times a day if you like, or just one
small square treat 10 times a day.
Obesity is a sure ticket to diabetes (as well as Alzheimers and other
serious health problems) just as it is with humans, so make sure not to give
your cat fattening foods. Avoid things like creams and cheeses and try to
buy the types of food that are designed specifically for overweight cats.
Iams has such a low-cal brand.
Your cat may, at first, let you know he isn't at all impressed with the
stinking food you're trying to trick him into eating. Like humans, cats
tend to like junk food best, and don't much care for the health food stuff.
He may put his nose up in the air and simply walk away knowing that you will
get upset if he doesn't eat, and will give him "decent" junk food again.
If he does this, very gradually mix the slimming food with his regular food,
slowly increasing the amount of the slimming food over a period of days
until he finally forgets what the delicious fattening food tasted like and
no longer resents you for pushing the slimming stuff on him.
Always make sure your cat has a lot of water to drink as well. Never let it
run out and don't use those horrible water containers on the market that
drip food into his bowl at all times. Those types just let small parasites
and bacteria grow into them. Responsibility is the most loving thing you
can offer your cat.

In Calgary many cats are diabetic because cat's aren't allowed outside, so
they spend most of their lives inside doing nothing but eating and sleeping.
Seems like a very cruel law and highly unnatural.
