My husband swears he smells cat pee all over our house. I smoke, so I don't
smell it. We have fought for years over this. We just had the old living
room furniture removed and new comes Monday (we are covering it with
plastic). There is no way today the house smells like it. I think it is in
his head. This may lead to divorce. I'm so sick of hearing it and I will not
give up my cats. He knew how I loved them when we married. Anyone ever heard
of anything to deaden or lessen a person's sense of smell?

he might smell it

it could be in the carpet or on the walls

try a black light

or have a professional come in and clean the house

hehe, I wrote this in the heat of anger, I know there is nothing to deaden
his sense of smell and it was a silly question. But I did take your advice
and used a black light. I found ONE little dribble in the room he said he
smelled it in. That stuff must be so strong. We just had the carpets cleaned
yesterday in the rooms with carpet is why I thought he was imagining it. The
dribble was in a room with hardwood. (I am so tired of fighting about this
though, *sigh*) Maybe I'll just make a daily chore of going around the house
with a black light and making sure there is none.

Urine odor can be trapped in fabric -- furniture, draperies, even wall
covering.  It does not have to be a spot where the cat has actually
urinated, and the smell can be *very* unpleasant.  Try burning some candles
occasionally (the type marketed as "odor absorbing"), but be *very careful*
that the candles are in a place where your cats cannot get burned.  Either
stay in the room with them, or place them in some sort of container well out
of the reach of even very agile cats.  Also, there is some odor absorbing
gel that is sold in small plastic cannisters with holes in the lid.  Leave
one or two of them in each room where there is some "offending" odor.  These
gels are *not* powerful enough to eliminate odors from actual urine stains,
but they help with odor that is in the air such as litter box odor (there
really should not be any from litter boxes, though, if the boxes are cleaned
frequently).

Thanks MaryL I have a TON of scented candles and I think they work, otherse
say it just coveresup problems. I'm gonna get some "odor absorbing" ones
tomorrow.

Great news..I got a pill down baby tonigt. Even afte I have notdone this for
weeks, as soon as I get a glass cup, a spooon and a can of tuna or wet cat
foord from the cabinet, they all swarm to the kitchen whereever they are, I
have to admit to 7 of them. That's what is tough giving a pill to ONE in
'treat' food but not letter the others have any.Of course, I put baby in
another room w/hers and gave the rest one teaspoon each to shut them up. But
first I even snuck the can of food, pill, spoon & glass bowl OUT IN MY CAR
to mix it up and they STARED OUT THE DOOR AT ME IN THE CAR!!!!Cats can be
really creepy sometimes. Too smart!

We have laid down light plastic self adhesiving cover around all the walls
in our liivng room & Hall , where ever we have carpet and will cover the new
couch & chair when it comes tomorrow. That's the best Iknow how to do. I am
going to the vet too tomorrow to demand there must be someing along the line
of what they are giving me in tablet or liquid form.

I know you guys don't know me, but I'm a try to ge a very good person to
eveyone I know an my only fault is once I take on a pet, it' s mine for
life. They are my kids to me since I didn't hae any.I deal with their
illnesses and spent boocoough bucks on em cause I love them. I am also going
to dedicate every other day to crawling around the house wiht a black light
& make sure there are no sparys we did see and also invest in the Feliway
products. they work, they are good, but expensive, but it's better than
replacing your carpet & furniture, huh? thanks for listening fellow animal
lovers and If I can ever help you...let me know. I had extensive experince
with a cat with diabetes and a cat with renal failure giving the insulin
shots and IV for the renal failure. Both lives happy and healthy for 3 more
yerars that the vets gave me. Take are all!

Keep the cats.

Get rid of the PITA husband.

You'll be MUCH happier!

The old "Air-Wick" bottles of the forties used to contain a chemical that
paralyzed the olfactory nerves, thereby making your home, "smell good".
Probably many of the new deoderizers work the same way....

1.  Sometimes if people don't like cats, they can imagine that so you might
want to ask some close friends who will be honest with you.

2.  Clean the litter box every day.  Also, make sure you buy the type of
litter that has odour control and store it in a place distant from where
your husband might sit.

3.  If any of your cats has messed somewhere, this can be difficult to
remove.  You have to purchase a special product from a pet store to remove
it and may have to apply it several times.

4.  Cook onions, bread, cake, or bacon every day.  They will make your house
smell so nice they should make your husband not notice anything else.
Onions will last the whole day.

5.  It's true that, given an ultimatum by a partner, about choosing EITHER
their pets or children OR them, most people will choose the pets or
children.  If you get divorced, make sure you find a cat lover THE NEXT
TIME.  They do exist and this is extremely important for cat lovers.   Keep
in mind also, that if you divorce you may have to move and pets always limit
the choices where you can live.

Someone may have already mentioned this, but DISTANCE will deaden the
smell. Like if the cat-jealous person is in another house, he won't be
able to smell anything offensive.
