KITTY LITTER DUST

Dennis - 31 Dec 2007 18:23 GMT Just became a cat owner a few months ago and thought I had done all my homework on the pros and cons of owning a cat, but there's always something you miss. In my case, it's the dust from the kitty litter that has settled over everything in my home. Is there anything that can be done to eliminate this most annoying problem. And before you even think of it, I ALREADY OWN A FEATHER DUSTER AND VACUUM CLEANER ;)

The dust is hazardous to your cat's health.

I use non scented brands with febreeze diffusers nearby I use a hepa filter machine myself to collect the dust and smell

Your friend MUST change the litterbox at least wice a DAY! and I use a Lysol room spray to get rid of the airborne germs from changing the 2 boxes.. and I wear a filter face mask as well. I got some litter that was dusty and may have gotten sick from inhaling it. BTW, Hi Count:) Thanx for the 'heads up' on you know who... OMG, you've got the M15 guy here too??? He's another paranoid idiot!!

I've used litters that are supposedly 99% dust free and still feel like I'm in Pigpen's dust cloud when I fill the litter box. Can anyone recommend a brand of scoopable that really is low on dust??

I wonder how these automatic, "self cleaning" ones they advertise on TV work.....Are they safe for the cat? - I mean, I would hate to have one of my cats get caught in the mechanism. Do they know if the cat is currently using it? You could enclose it in a box, and vent it to the outside with a small muffin fan if it really bothered you that much.....If nothing else, It would get the smell out of the house......

Do they know if the cat is currently using > it? I've had three Littermaids and finally came to the conclusion that I was wasting money. The first was replaced under warranty. It died a few weeks after the one year warranty expired. When the third one screwed up I tossed it and didn't bother getting it replace under the warranty. It's almost as easy to scoop a regular litter box as it is to toss and then replace the waste tray from one of the automatic units. As far as knowing it's running, you can hear it straining the litter. In the beginning, my cat would watch it running and I'm sure she was jumping into it occasionally just to see it run, but she wouldn't jump in if it was running at the time.
seejaneburn - 29 Jan 2008 07:59 GMT (de-lurking for a minute) I know it's not scoopable, but I use the recycled newspaper litter, for four reasons: Dust free, so much lower risk of respiratory problems and airborn greeblies, low odour (it seems to mask ammonia very well), cheap so instead of scooping I just tip the whole lot in the bin every day and it can be bought in bulk, and environmentally friendly. I'm in Australia so not sure what is available to you, but after testing many litter brands and types, this seems to be the best combined value for money/odour control/healthwise of the brands available to me. Another good alternative if you can find it is lucerne pellets, often can be bought in bulk at feed stores for a few dollars a litre.

This topic comes up often and most folks think that Littermaid is a waste of money. Having looked around a bit I almost bought this one:
http://www.litter-robot.com/
It is NOT cheap, around $300.
I didn't buy it because I'm going to have the bathroom redone soon and I'm going to try to have a litter box area where an electric eye turns on a fan/filter when the darlings use the box. I really don't mind scooping but I do hate the dust. Checking the litter is one of the ways we can tell how our felines are feeling and I really hate to give that up.
But if I was going to buy one of these things, this is the one I would get.

I considered one of those at one point, but it doesn't really seem like there's a lot a space in there for a cat. And although poop might be filtered away quickly, when she pees it would be hitting the sides of the LitterRobot. I know if I was a cat, climbing into that thing wouldn't be pleasant. I think the biggest thing I didn't like about the Littermaid wasn't that it was breaking down (although that was certainly a contributing factor), but that there were so many nooks and crannies for poop to get lodged in and that it was a really big pain in the a.s to clean when I wanted to every month or two.
Another thing that bothered me with the Littermaid is that the sides of them aren't as high as they could be and my big cat sometimes sprayed over the edge of the Littermaid.

kuhnfucius - 07 Feb 2008 16:18 GMT I use the "close spaces" tidy cat. This is a more expensive liter and not all stores in my area carry this specific type of Tidy Cat, but as far as dust is concerned it is one of the best that I have tried (not saying that I have tried all brands). I was disappointed with arm & hammer's liter because of dust. Close Spaces granules seem to be larger than other types and my pride's feet seem to carry them all over the place ....

It's made from corn (I think) and has less dust than some of the other types of litters. And it clumps pretty good too.

What it doesn't do is clump up the urine so it can be removed. What I do now is mix it approximately half-and-half with "Tidy Cat 3" (one time I replenish the box with WBCL, the next with TC3). Mostly clumping, but still has the anti-ammonia thing going.

AMUN - 02 Jan 2008 00:15 GMT There are plenty of decent generic/store brands in both USA and Canada. Most is all made by one factory and just marketed under various"name brands" for ridiculous profits.
C'mon people, it's cat litter. The cat will not care much about what BRAND it defecates in.
And the money you save can be spent on special treats for kitty.

We do buy the "clumping" clay litter, sometimes scented, sometimes unscented, depending on who picks it up and what is cheapest.
We tried the "natural" stuff once, and the cats tracked it all over the house,....never again
I've found that just about any brand has good batches and bad. But a vacuum cleaner hose held over the box while you toss the litter around a bit gets rid of surplus dust.

Well, Li'l Abner's teacher said the three uses of corn were eatin', drinkin' and smokin'. In recent years we have added drivin'. And now, it seems we can add kitty litter.......

Come full circle from a cat named Tony the Tiger telling us to eat it, and now we see what that cats think about corn themselves.
At least we know the people at the "Corn Marketing Association " are earning their paychecks.
Sherwind2010 - 16 Jan 2008 13:12 GMT I live in Canada and the one i get is Maxx Scoop, i bin getting it for 2 years now for my cat. I moved out of my apartment over 2 weeks ago. I'm now sharing rent with 4 others and i wanted my cat to be in my room and let him out once in awhile. I have my kitty litter in my room and for the 1st week i had a tickle at the back of my throat. Few days ago my throat started to get a little sore...I wake up and my throat is really sore. I'm like man!! what is making me feel like this? My cat makes a mess with the Maxx Scoop and get some on the floor, I need to clean it daily. Today my cat dumped his water on the floor and mixed in with at Maxx Scoop. It's 3am. I put the kitty litter outside my room and his Food, water. and i cleaned up the mess of mixed Maxx Scoop and water and opened the window. i had it opened for an hour now, My throat is feeling a little better. So Now I'm thinking what is this stuff doing to my cat if it did this to me in 2 weeks? My cat always had a some times meows that's silent. I didn't think any thing of it. Maybe i should switch my litter? I live in a small town. I think there is only 3 to choose from. One looks like a NoName Crystal one, I don't buy in to NoName stuff, I don't think they work good. I don't know what the other one is. I Buy only what i think is the best, Maxx Scoop looks like it is the best one there. So i was looking in to that Pet Ecology or World’s Best Cat Litter I'm guessing thats stuff is sold in the US? Maybe the Pet Ecology will ship to Canada for high $$! I do live near a city we don't go there much, It's about and hour and a half away. they have a Pet Mart there. Thats where i got my cat. He was a gift on my birthday in 2005. There is a Cosco there too and a Wal-Mart. I don't know if they would sell ((THE WORLD’s BEST CAT LITTER!!)) or the Pet Ecology. I could look around. I don't know what i should do about my sore throat, I could still talk.

I have used Worlds Best for years. In fact that is all I ever used and never had trouble with "clumping up the urine so it can be removed".
As for getting saturated with urine if it scooped daily or twice daily and changed regularly and not let go for extended periods it should not get saturated. But then I usually scoop mine whenever I see one of mine use it. Kind of like flushing the toilet every time you use it. Try to clean litter box every use. Of course I am retired and home all day so I can.
Good luck

Use 2 storage bins or 5 gal pails- pour the litter back and forth from one pail to the other a few times. This will get rid of most of the dust. Hold the pails as high as you can just before the litter starts blowing away. The more times you dump the litter back and forth the more dust you'll eliminate.

ccwhit - 11 Jan 2008 19:55 GMT Note that cat poop should not be flushed. Why? Because cat poop contains a parasite known as Toxoplasmosis which is harmful to our friends the Sea Otters. Cat litter which has not been chemically treated is great for composting. It easily breaks down and can help your compost pile reach the ideal carbon to nitrogen ratio. BUT you should always take out solid waste before putting the cat litter into your compost pile. Best place for cat poop is the trash, destination land fill.

But give that cat poop to the Seagulls who live in the piles at the landfill. They eat it, then fly out over the Otters and bombard them. And how about those poor rats at the dumps that will have to walk through it ?

Two cats peeing in a good-sized pan with a bit over an inch of this poured initially will need over a week of usage before odor of urine becomes apparent. Also, as the volume is much greater by weight, the ~$10 per 20 pound bag works out not so costly as one might think. Roughly, it's equivalent to over well 3 times the usage per pound as the clay, perhaps more. By my estimate, I get six fills, more than six weeks, from the 20 pound bag. I've been using it for many years now--it's really the best. -maxwell
