Let me be the first one to say:
Take your cat to the vet.
I predict I won't be the last.

You just won your prediction because I'll join you in this. Absolutely,
take the cat to the vet. It's much better to erron the side of caution and
seek veterinary advice (even if it turns out not to be significant) than to
play a "waiting" game and possibly regret it.

Take you cat to the vet now!!
What would you do if the infection (If that is what it is) would
spread and they had to remove the leg?!?!?
Take you cat to the vet now!!
Thanx for responses on a previous post that i left. Tommies swelling went
down after 2 days then reappeared so i took to the vet on weds for info on
lancing and was supposed to pick up on friday .. The vet clinic called me
early thursday morning to tell me Tommy died, the abcess was actually
cancer and he was diagnosed with FIV and liver was real bad. Tommy was a
stray kitten and appeared at my door 6 yrs ago and adopted us I had him
neuterd and vaccinated but i didnt keep up on yearly virus shots and now I
cant even explain the hurt I am going through as i shamefully feel i am at
fault and what hurts the most is my other cat goes to the couch Tommy slept
on and stands up looking for him, any suggestions how to deal with this?
I miss you Tommy my baby boy.

I'm very sorry for your loss. You absolutely did the right thing to
take him to the vet and I'm just sorry his condition was more serious
than an abcess. Cats are masters at hiding symptoms which is why it's
so important to schedule an appointment as soon as you think there
might be a problem.
It's never easy to lose a friend - I can only suggest that you try to
focus on the years you gave Tommy in a loving home rather than
assuming responsibility for an evil virus that may have been lurking
in his system for years and years. If you hadn't opened your door and
your heart to him, he would most likely have had a sad and short life.
Since he came to you as a stray, he may have sustained the bite that
carried the virus into his bloodstream long before you took him in.
As for your other cat, it's not unusual for cats to mourn the loss of
a friend. Spoil him rotten - it will help both of you heal.

hello, I was very sad to hear about the loss of Tommy, he sounds like a much
loved and missed little fellow.
It brought back similar feelings which I felt in almost identical
circumstances and I don't mind admitting I cried more over the loss of my
beautiful friend and companion 'Cruncher' ( he crunched his biscuits
loudly!!) than I did when a relative passed-on. I couldn't help it - that's
just the way it turned out .. I was inconsolable for weeks - I really did
make myself quite ill over his passing and then one day my brother (of all
people) directed me to a website run by a really very nice old chap called
Loren Parks from America (where else!).
Initially, it was to look at something else - how this man had helped to
cure him (literally) of a life-long affliction of serious nail biting (sorry
if this is long winded but there is a point to it honest ..) anyway, this
man Loren Parks is a retired life-long psychiatrist and from his site he
gives streaming audio messages - a bit akin to hypnotherapy advice on a
range of subjects, maladies, angst's and assorted problems ... all for free,
nothing else is involved.
Anyway, (again), whilst looking through the list of items that he had
streaming audio for there was something that caught my eye instantly.
It said, (quite simply - and brutally) 'Are you suffering emotional hurt
because of the loss of a loved pet ..' .... well, I could not click on this
quick enough and as with the others a streaming audio of about only 2
minutes duration came over my speakers and here was this old boy from
America talking to me about how and why I should not be at all sad over this
loss and ..... well, I will let those who are interested go to Loren Parks
site and see and hear for yourselves what it is that he said to me but take
it from me my sadness lifted *immediately*, suddenly I saw it all
differently and he showed me how to 'disconnect' ..... in the nicest way
possible I hasten to add!
I don't want to say anything else because I would probably only mess it up
but if you ever need emotional support for the loss of a beautiful moggie
you could not do better than visit Loren Parks site at;
http://www.psychresearch.com/index.html
Apparently it is called the 'Psychological Research Foundation, Inc''
Incidentally, I don't have any affiliation or connection with this and am
not an ambassador for the site other than a so-called 'happy-punter' and
offer it to those who need support.
Rest-on Tommy boy.
