I have a cat who is just over a year old who is licking the fur off near
his tail. I took him to the vet and he got a perfectly clean bill of
health (no fleas, worms, illness of any sort) and said to just give him
lots of attention! I'm doing that and he is still licking off his fur
there. Is there anything I can get to put on that spot or home treatments
that will make the area less ... desirable to lick? I know for chewing
things like cords there is the bitter apple spray, is there anything
similar for the body??? He is normally a VERY gorgeous cat and I hate that
he's doing this.
Thanks in advance for all your tips!!!

hi is it an indoor cat? if so she might want to go out even if she was
spayed. my nieces male does the same thing and the vet seems to think
it is a behavioral problem. alot of cats when they are upset over
various things do tend to chew and lick until there are open sors.i
sure hope she gets over this soon if not a cortisone shot helpsto
clear up any sores she might have, good luck to you and your baby.Tammy

Hi
I am not a vet but this could be an obsessive complusive disorder
called "barbering" when the cat is stressed due to one of many
factors, one of which could be separation anxiety. If you are away a
lot and close to him that may be the reason. Answer: distractions,
your company, activity, train it out of him, short course of
tranquillisers.

One thing that I have seen in cats that are just licking the hair off around
their tails (in the absence of any obvious things like fleas, etc.) is full
anal sacs. It is not as common a problem in cats as in dogs but it does
come up and this can be a symptom. Have your vet check to anal sacs to rule
this out.

My cat was licking his toosh and lower stomach all the time 'til he was bald
in spots. vet told me that it was because he had gotten a little heavy (mind
you my cat was 10 lbs...I didn't think this was a big deal) - she said that
when cats experience pressure/pain on certain parts of their body they will
lick close to the area in the hopes of getting rid of it - I got my cat down
to 9 lbs and he stopped the obsessive licking. in your case I think the idea
of an anal irritation may make sense.
also I did start making my cat run around a lot more - instead of simply
giving him attention, I got on the floor and ran around with string or a ball
or a mouse - once my cat had more physical stimulation he settled right down.
I think that you may want to make your cat get more physical exertion - not
simply general attention. you may not always be in the mood to run around
everyday digging toys out from under the couch, but if it stops the licking
you'll at least know the problem.
