cat feeding

So my cat's getting chunky.  She's about 7 months old, spayed, ~10lb as
of a month or two ago, medium-haired "mutt".  I have her food in one of
those feeders that has a reservoir, so it keeps the dish approximately
full, but it looks like she eats too much from it.  This weekend, I'll get
an electronic feeder that doles out food on a schedule.  Same as this, but
not from there:

How much food should I give her?  Start out with a lot, see if she eats
it, reduce the amount if so?  I stuck a graduated scale on the side of her
old feeder, but stupid me, it's by weight and pretty much everybody goes
by volume.

An ASCII character walks into a bar and orders a double. "Having a bad
day?" asks the barman. "Yeah, I have a parity error," replies the ASCII
chrcter. The barman says, "Yeah, I thought you looked a bit off." - Skud

I don't think there is one "correct" amount to feed.

Depends on whether the cat goes for miles outside and hunts down it's own
food, or stays locked in an apartment all day.
And as colder weather sets in a lot of cats normally put on a few pounds of
fat for warmth.
So your concerns may not be that serious.

A good rule of thumb is, if the cat is walking and it's belly drags on the
floor, you can cut back on the food.

Arrgh!  "if not".  There's bug #1, and it's not even a program.

No.  She's deaf, so it'd be dangerous to let her outside.

House, but yes.

OK.

Well, that seems kinda late.  Is there an easy way to tell for cats?
She is getting rather wide.  Maybe this is normal.

Unfortunately as she's only 7 months old you really won't know what "normal"
weight will be.
But at 7 months she's still growing, so better to err towards too much
rather than not enough, and don't worry about the weight until she's at
least a few years old.
...Unless you see the belly dragging.

Cat's are generally pretty good at controlling their own food intake, as
long as they realize food will always be available when they do want it.
