Hello all....

I have a domestic female.. She is two years old and has been spayed..
She is jet black and a lovable sweetheart.. She greets me when I come
in from work (I am single male, 48...) and sleeps with me every
night.. I make sure she has plenty of water and food every day before
I leave for work.. But in the past couple of weeks she has taken on an
annoying habit: she howls.. It is the most deep throated long meow I
have ever heard out of a cat... I have never heard a cat do this
before.. Sometimes she does it on the end of my bed, I will pick her
up and she will stop, but sometimes it is in other parts of the
house.. I will call her to no avail.. I am loosing sleep !! :-) All
the interior doors of the house are open for her to roam.. She is an
entirely inside cat.. I have explored the outside on the night she
howls looking for another cat she might be seeing but there is none..
Her vet is clueless and so am I...
Any ideas or suggestions??????

Has she been tested for hyperthyroidism?  That would be very rare at her
age, but vocalization is sometimes a sign (especially when it occurs
suddenly).  If this is the problem, it is easily treated -- but it is
important to get an early diagnosis because it can lead to a reversible form
of heart disease.  Have there been any other symptoms, such as increased
appetite or hyperactivity?

Her appetite has been normal as far as I can tell.. She was the runt
of the litter so she is small.. She was one of six, I think.. As far
as hyperactivity and hyperthyroidism, she had a full check up last
month.. I mentioned the howling to her vet so I'm sure that she
checked her for that, but I will check.. And she is not hyperactive..
Thanks for the tip!

If there is no medical reason, get her a companion.

I have four cats (two are "pals" and the other two are "pals").

It's normal for the males to howl for seemingly no reason without there
being a medical problem.  Sometimes, one of them even goes into the bathtub
to hear himself "sing" better.  The other favors the closet, almost like he
goes in there and wails, he gets all "chirpy" when we open the door like he
is playing a game of "come rescue me". The females to it much less often,
but still do. (One with a toy in her mouth, which makes a really
creepy-mournful sound.)

I think it's a territory or "hey, I am here! where are you!" kind of thing,
as it happens more often among the two that hang out with her more if she's
out of town for a few days.  My parent's single female cat did it late at
night all her life.

A solitary cat probably does it more, but it's not necessarily bad aside
from the "waking you up" part.  Sometimes they come if you call out to them,
sometimes not.  A companion cat might help, humans are probably an
incomplete substitute for cat - cat social needs, but don't expect it to
cease entirely.

Every cat I have known has done that occasionally. Some of them don't do it
for years at a time, some weekly. I wouldn't be too concerned with medical
issues being the cause.

Our female stared a few years ago and has gotten very good at
making some really weird sounds.  I think you may have it with
"hey I am here".  That seems to fit in best with the situations
we hear it from our cat.

I think it's important to remember when trying to understand animal
behavior that it's a very small brain.  There is not going to
be a lot of reason behind anything they do.  Look for the simplest
explanation but don't expect consistent reasoning.

I'm pretty sure they like to hear themselves too.

Y'all should really hear this cat! It would make an excellent
Halloween gimmick!! It is the most forlorn and hopeless sound I have
ever heard a cat (or any other animal for that matter) make.. I will
probably get used to it, but now, it's like having a wolf in the
bedroom!! I have heard that some cats have odd habits but this is one
I could do without!!!

Much thanx for all the info

If you have the technology, try to record it.
I think we'd all love to hear it.

Check out youtube for funny cat noises, I just did,
it's a riot.
