Renal Failure

I just took my 4 yr old female Siamese to the vet for dental cleaning.
The vet ran some lab tests because she had been vomiting more often
then usual. I was shocked when he told me that the lab showed she was
in 70% renal failure. She has no symptoms at all, except the vomiting.
But she has been vomiting ever since she was a kitten. And the vet
said that most cats do vomit. Her renal labs are elevated and she is
anemic too. The vet was shocked because she is so young to have this
disease. I have started her on a special diet and antibiotics. I am
scared to death of her dying. Has anyone had this problem with their
cat?

There is a lot to learn but this will help and arm you wth the
information you need to provide your cat with a good quality of life for
hopefully a long time.

"Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one
elementary truth the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and
splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then
providence moves too. A whole stream of events issues from the decision,
raising in one's favor all manner of unforeseen incidents, meetings and
material assistance, which no man could have dreamt would have come his
way."

For Sally,

My 13 jears old cat Snoopy has 60% renal failure.
My vet told it after some lab test  3 days ago and  I'm so shocked.
She had also no symtoms at all.
I hope the diet will give her some years of live. I'm als scared.

I wish you all the best with your cat, she is so young.

I'm so sorry to hear about Snoopy.  It sounds from your post that Snoopy needs
care but will still have a quality of life left. I hope that is the case. I
wish you & Snoopy well.

That's actually an arbitrary number.  Generally, no symptoms show until
about 75% of kidney function has already been lost.

With care and luck, this could still be years away.

| Has anyone had this problem with their cat?

Yes, me.  My cat Scruffy was diagnosed with CRF when he was 4-5 years
old (I don't know his exact age - our paths crossed when he was an adult
- but I had reasonably reliable information on when he was born.)  That
was two years ago, and he's still holding up pretty well.

Go to this site: http://www.felinecrf.org/.  It has everything you need
to know.

My own advice: hydration is key.  Try to maximize fluid intake.  That
means *no* dry food.  Canned food only, maybe even mixed with some extra
water.  If she'll eat the special diets (like Hills k/d), okay, but if
there's a problem, not eating is worse than eating something reasonable,
generally a high-quality food with decently low phosphorus content.
(Scruffy won't touch the special diets, so I've been giving him Wellness
to no apparent ill effect.)

Also, remember that many cats have a poor drinking instinct.  You should
encourage your cat to drink water.  She'll be peeing buckets as the
condition progresses, so the loss has to be made up.
