Hi:
I'm new to this group, too, and like a lot of people in this forum, I
suspect, I have a cat whom I dearly love.
Last time I gave her anything commercial, aside from dry Purina (which
is available all the time), she got desperately sick and I thought she
was going to die. This was from a can of Fancy Feast; I did research
and never could find anything definitive which indicated this product
was polluted, but I think it was. She's a totally inside cat.
Right now, I'm occasionally giving her a bit of canned tuna or salmon,
but can anyone tell me, is there any can cat food and also treats,
which are sure to be safe?
Thanks in advance,
Connie

Thank you. I didn't realize cats could have a wheat allergy. I guess
the next question is, what products without any wheat are felt to be
safe nowadays?
Recommendations?

Do you have the group rec.pets.cats.health+behav
If not you can use Google to access it. There are a few there that should
know

No. And there doesn't have to be anything wrong with the product: some
cats have allergies, just as humans do, and some are genetically
intolerent of various nutrients.
On the other hand, nominally pure foods, especially fish, may have
significant levels of heavy metals such as mercury, or of pesticides.
That goes for fresh caught mice as well.
It's not good to give a cat canned fish all the time. One of my cats
requires supplemental feeding with canned food - I buy a variety of
non-gravy flavors of cheap canned food (since I have to put down a second
bowl to keep some of the others distracted, it takes fourteen cans a
week). The basic diet for my clowder of fifteen is kibble: Walmart's
Special Kitty brand in two flavors. It's cheap and they thrive on that
and what they catch.

I suspect the recalls we know about were the tip of the iceberg. Just pay
close attention to what might makes them sick and discontinue use if it
does.
One thing I have had great success with is having a small tupperware
container with regular dry food in it. Either spice it up with a tiny bit
of fish oil or maybe make it a different brand or flavor and keep it tightly
sealed so it retains all the nice odors.
Then, just ACT like it's a big treat, serve it on your lap or wherever. My
cats never know the difference and think it's great. They'll even stop
eating the same stuff at the bowl to come have some of the special treats
fed by hand.
There are advantages to being a brainy primate, not having to dig a hole to
go in is not the only one.

I use Wellness canned (chicken formula). I does not contain wheat.

My owners are the same about ham. They love ham..they would kill each
other for an extra morsel of ham. The first time they ever had ham
when they were about 6 months old..Dunzi got there first usually the
smaller and quieter of the kittens she probably got in first because
Sarsi her hyperactive sister was doing something else. Then Sarsi came
in to see what the fuss was and we're sitting there wondering what the
noise was...It was Dunzi growling at Sarsi to leave her and her ham
alone! An enormous noise from such a small kitten
But throw some in their bowl and it can be the very finest ham and
they just aren't interested
You have to make a big thing about eating some yourself and saying
things like "This is the best ham ever, I don't think I can spare any
of this really best ham ever for you two" and then they're there,
watching your every move and Dunzi will come up and pat you on the
knee to remind you that although she is only little, she would be
happy to recieve ham. So you throw them bits or they take them out of
your hand but you can be eating some ham and they can be all over it
but as soon as it's put in the bowl suddenly it's not edible.
I think they enjoy the game as much as the ham

That's a really sweet story, Leslie. I'm a vegetarian, though, so
it's kind of a problem for me. I don't force Annie to be a
vegetarian, however. If I had dogs, I might, but I'm totally a cat
person.
