My wife got a new pair of shoes at the weekend, and as usual her cat
Gizmo went and tried to sit in the box the shoes came in. Not only did
it manage to get in (small box, big cat :-) but promptly fell asleep in
it. Next day of course the box was ignored. Why do they always get into
boxes and baskets ? Anybody else see behaviour like this ?

Oh, yes, every time. I've seen them stuff their fat selves into ridiculously
small boxes and stay there for hours. Nice, soft, fluffy cat beds, they ignore.

I was moving about three years ago - every time I got ready to pack up a
new box, Elmo was in there without hesitation.  It's a wonder I didn't pack
him up as well.  I get any kind of box in the mail, they are trying to get
in it.  Now I've got two young ones who are always investigating things -
boxes, bags.  Tiny Shorty is the ring leader, Tia follows.  :)

Yup, sounds familiar, the other thing that happens is that once one of
the two has found a box/bag then it becomes a competition to get there
before the other one, some famous scratching and spitting battles ensue :-)

Boxes, bags, drawers ... mine's the same.
I think they do it to max the chances of remaining unseen by passing prey.
You should be careful when they do this .... muahahaha.

Oh my god.. looking at those pics took me back to when Chayla was a kitten.
Chloe looks exactly the same. And the picture with Chloe and Mia? Chayla
would sleep with me just like that.. :::sniffle::: They grow up so fast!!

"Yeah.. it was in Buffy's underwear drawer. She has nice things."
"Show me."

Both of my cats try it. My smaller female cat likes to sleep in the
boxes that cases of Fancy feast come in.  My male cat likes to sleep in
shoe boxes or new   empty - empty as in no litter - litter boxes that
have just been bought.

My three year old Tiny has figured out how to get the tops off of bankers'
boxes.  My wife keeps them around to store paper work.  Tiny gets her nose
in  under the lid and then uses her head to push the lid up so she can
crawl in.  Sometimes the lid falls back down after she is in (all the
better, as far as she is concerned!) and the only way we know she is in
there is when we hear rustling coming from the box.
