Woah, that's a bit harsh. The OP didn't mention putting the cat down
because he has diabetes he was just looking for a bit of support.
Diabetes is a big deal - it is a chronic, progressive disease
affecting every body system and requires careful management and
constant vigilance. Yes, the cat can still have a good quality of life
but anyone who's furry friend is diabetic is right to feel a bit
daunted by the situation.
Tom's parent, I'm afraid I can't offer any practical advice as I've
never had a cat with diabetes but I feel for you and Tom and hope you
can get the advice and support you need.

I got the impression from the OP they weren't considering learning to give
Tom his shots and are about to put him down. Of course diabetes is a
serious disease, but as I said a cat can live for many years after getting
it if treated properly like we did with our old Loki boy.
