We just adopted a 4 year old female cat a week ago from the humame society.
She had been at the shelter for about 2 weeks and was very affectionate. But
when we got her home she ran under the bed and seldom comes out but to eat
and use the litter pan. Then she goes right back under the bed!We tried
putting her in one room with litter pan, food and water but then she meows
the whole time. Anyone have any ideas why she's acting this way??

Yes   she came from a secure area that she knew  now was thrust into a new
environment.  Don't keep changing rooms all you are doing is scaring her
more and confusing her.

What you need to do is put her in one room that is low traffic.  Let her
come out on her own  encourage her talk to her  give her treats when she
comes out.  Make her feel secure  never drag her out never punish her for
this behavior.  It is going to take a while  it could take months

I tell everyone to think this way  I take you out of your home put you in a
strange area that you have no idea about.  I make a lot of strange noise and
new smells.  You have nothing that you know are recognize  how would you
react

What she is doing is a very normal behavior  be patient

Oh  THANK YOU FOR ADOPTING FROM A SHELTER  AND SAVING A LIFE

Welcome to slave hood

Here is a excellent site to help you out  The person that runs its it is

once again matthew you nailed it.  the kitty was secure so be patient and
she will be secure again.  all of my kittys are strays or from shelters and
as bob barker would say get em spayed or neutered.  and love em.
