Don't buy the Bamboo CatFisher.  It's a cheap (but real) fish pole with a
toy mouse attached to the end of real fishing line.

The package made me think it would be great fun for my cat since I've pulled
thread along and he's chased after it before.  Five minutes into playing
with it the line got tangled around his tail, he started to dance around
realizing that something was attached to him, freaked out and went running
down the hallway.  Luckily I had the cast button pressed in and he was able
to run for a while but eventually the pole ended up flying down the hallway
too.  He managed to untangle himself by the time I got to him.

I'm glad he wasn't hurt but I blame myself for using it in the first place-
I should have stopped when I saw real fishing line.  It could have easily
tangled around his paw or neck making things much worse.

PetSmart sells it for about $20.00 and they refunded my money without
hesitation.  If anyone has it and actually thinks it is a good toy, please
let the group know but as far as I'm concerned it's dangerous even when your
furry friend is being supervised while playing with it!

I'd agree and also add, for sure never let your cat play with a ball of
twine, even under supervision  ...

all of missy's toys don't have string,
lesson learned along time ago when i almost lost a furball.
i had a string with a ball attached to it, it was tied to a door knob.
kitty hung himself, luckly i forgot my cigs at home so i circled back
home and found tiger hanging, fighting to get free.
after that, all cat toys have been string/rope free.

kitty was ok, just badly frighten.

I use the feathers/string/rope toys but those are interactive with Buddy a
few feet away from me.  The "string" in this case is usually pretty thick
and I haven't seen him manage to tangle himself in it yet but now I wonder
if anyone has had problems with these toys as well?  I'm going to start
putting it up when I'm not home since he does drag it around from time to
time.

I recently purchased a feather that sits on top of a wind-up base that spins
for a few minutes... Buddy likes that until it stops spinning... I'd like to
find something similar that runs on batteries, or one of those mice that
moves around on its own that works on carpeting since he seems to lose
attention with most toys that don't do anything for him.  Toy balls are by
far his favorite but that's because I throw them for him!

If you are afraid of the strings like I am, then let your cats chew
ribbons (the wide ones).  The cats I have love to chew ribbon, but I
never let them chase it around on the floor.  And there are tons of
rope/string/cable/line free toys, like those suede mice my cats love.
